Annual May Tea Celebrates Community Medical Center Auxiliary Association's 60th Anniversary

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (May 22, 2014) – More than 200 guests attended the Community Medical Center (CMC) May Tea on May 19 to celebrate the work of the hospital’s Auxiliary Association, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and has raised more than $10.3 million since its inception. The annual event provides Auxilians with an opportunity to network, hear updates on the medical center, and be honored for their work throughout the year.

The May Tea, held at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Toms River, is a time-honored tradition dating back to the Auxiliary’s founding in 1954, when 200 women attended a Tea at the Toms River Town Hall to discuss the need for a hospital in central Ocean County. Auxiliary members support Community Medical Center's commitment to building lifetime relationships and improving the health of its community by serving as ambassadors to promote community service, education, quality care and wellness.

“Community Medical Center has evolved into a state-of-the-art hospital over the past 60 years. Our dedicated Auxilians have contributed to the hospital’s ability to bring the residents of Ocean County the highest quality care and sophisticated medical services. With every new expansion, renovation and addition – many of which are a result of the Auxiliary’s fundraising efforts – we are working to keep pace with the growing healthcare needs of the surrounding community,” said Stephanie L. Bloom, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer, Community Medical Center.

“The Auxiliary has done a wonderful job in helping Community Medical Center in its mission to care for the residents of Ocean County. It’s been 60 years since women from the community united to play an instrumental part in getting the hospital built. Since that time, the committed group of volunteer Auxiliary members have continued to painstakingly raise funds any and every way possible – from simple bake sales to larger-scale dinner cruises,” said Judy Schmidt, who has served as President of the Auxiliary for 10 years – making her its longest-running president. “Auxilians act as the worker bees for fundraising for the hospital and help ensure Community Medical Center continues to meet patients’ needs.”

In addition to fundraising events and initiatives, the Auxiliary Association helps manage the Second Time Around Consignment and Thrift Shop and the hospital gift shop, proceeds of which benefit the Auxiliary treasury and support hospital programs and services.

Since it originated, the Auxiliary has raised funds to support key programs, services and upgrades throughout the hospital, including: Emergency Department expansion and renovations, renovations and equipment in the J. Phillip Citta Regional Cancer Center, construction of and state-of-the-art equipment for the Jay and Linda Grunin Neuroscience Institute, Women’s Imaging Center and renovations for the Women's Health Unit among others.

The Auxiliary has also sponsored an annual Wish List Program since 2003 that has provided more than $1 million for items specifically focused on patient comfort and care.
