Adoption Fees Waived for County Shelters

Special event on April 9

Ocean County’s Health Department is again stepping up efforts to get cats and dogs at its shelters adopted, waiving fees on some of the adoptions during an April 9 Spring Fling.

Freeholder Gerry P. Little said the event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Northern Animal Shelter at 615 Freemont Road in Jackson, and the Southern Animal Shelter at 360 Haywood Road in Manahawkin.

Dozens of dogs and cats will be available for adoption, Little said. Bake and craft sales, games and prizes will be included. The Easter Bunny will appear at the southern shelter, and a photo session will be held at the one in Jackson.

“Both our animal facilities and foster group are overcrowded,’’ explained Brian Lippai, manager of the shelters. “Cats and kitten season is just around the corner,’’ he said. “We have plenty of beauties to choose from.’’

While the traditional adoption fees are being waived for some of the animals, Little said those getting the animals are urged to make donations to volunteer groups that help operate the shelters. In exchange, he said they will provide a free starter kit for newly adopted pets.
