Low Pressure, Discolored Water Possible When Hydrant Flushing Begins Monday

Flushing program begins April 1 and will run for about nine weeks, according to United Water

United Water Toms River customers may experience low water pressure or discolored water during a routine hydrant flushing program scheduled to begin Monday, April 1.

The utility's flushing program, which will remove "harmless" minerals that collect in water mains, will last for about nine weeks and conclude near May 31. During that time, crews will work Monday through Thursday between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. and Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 12 p.m — no flushing is scheduled for weekends, according to the utility.

"The program is part of the company’s routine maintenance program to assure high water quality. Flushing hydrants helps to maintain the integrity of the distribution system by keeping the water lines clean," said Jim Mastrokalos, director of operations, in a statement. "It is also necessary for fire protection because flushing ensures that the hydrants are working properly."
