Seaside Heights is Hiring

Big seasonal job fair May 7

Looking for a summer job? You'll have a pretty fair chance at getting one if you impress employers at a May 7 employment event on the Boardwalk in Seaside Heights.

Christine Karaska, an employment specialist with the N.J. Department of Labor, organizes job fairs throughout the year to “keep Ocean County working,” she said.

Summer jobs along the barrier peninsula are expected to be plentiful and employers will gather on the Boardwalk at Webster Avenue in Seaside Heights that Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to screen applicants age 16 and older for open positions.

“Summer jobs aren't just for teenagers,” Karaska said, explaining that, while 16 is the minimum age limit, older applicants also are encouraged to attend the fair.

The jobs that need to be filled “will run the gamut,” Karaska said, from cashiers to lifeguards.

Other positions include “deli clerks, evening stock replenishers, ride operators, arcade workers, food servers and parking lot attendants.”

Representatives from the A&P supermarket in the Ortley Beach section of Toms River Township and other food markets, convenience stores , retail shops and boardwalk businesses of all types will attend the event. Some employers will hire people on the spot. Others may call some applicants back for a second interview.

“The job openings are not just in Seaside Heights,” Karaska said, noting that posts in Ortley Beach and other locations along the barrier peninsula need to be filled. The locations are convenient and, with high gasoline prices, will save employees money because they are a short communte to and from many other Ocean County towns.

Some jobs pay the state minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. Others offer higher hourly rates. Some positions also have the potential to evolve into year-round employment, Karaska said.
