Will Seaside Roller Coaster Stay In The Atlantic Ocean?

Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers said the site could become a "tourist attraction" as the boardwalk is rebuilt

Could the roller coaster that was swept into the Atlantic Ocean as Hurricane Sandy hit the Jersey Shore remain where it is, standing straight up?

So says Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers, who told WNBC-TV in New York that the ride could become "a great tourist attraction" if it stays where it is.

From WNBC's report:

The picture of the ride, which looks more like a water slide these days, has become an iconic image of the damage Sandy wreaked up and down the coast just over three weeks ago.

But Akers, in an interview with NBC 4 New York, said he is working with the Coast Guard to see if it is stable enough to leave it alone.

If it is, Akers said it would make "a great tourist attraction."

Meanwhile, demolition crews have already finished removing all of the damaged boardwalk. Businessmen like Mike Mergott of Mad Mike's Amusements said he is rebuilding because he is "100 percent sure" families want to come back.

Jim Loundy, who owned several buildings wiped away by the surge is confident he won't see another storm like this for "another 50 or 60 years."

Akers said construction on a new boardwalk should begin in January, and be ready by Memorial Day.

YES, REALLY, WHAT YOU SAY IS TRUE ALSO. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS IN GETTING THE PEOPLE TO GET THIS GUY AND ALL HIS CRONIES OUT OF OFFICE. DON'T KNOW IF YOU ARE AWARE, BUT HE ONLY TOOK OFFICE ON THE 1ST OF THIS PAST YEAR. HE'S A CHEF AT HIS OWN RESTAURANT ALSO. IT'S CALLED BOBBER'S. IT'S A BREAKFAST PLACE, AND HE COOKS VERY WELL. GIVES GOOD FOOD FOR THE SMALL CHARGE, AND HE AND HIS FAMILY RUN IT, AND I THINK THAT'S WHAT THEY SHOULD CONTINUE TO DO, AND THAT'S IT. NOTHING ELSE. THE PLACE IS OPEN IN SUMMER ONLY IN MORNING TIL 12:00 P.M. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH OWNERS TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN, AND SOME OF THEM HAVE BEEN DEVASTATED TO POINT OF NO RETURN. WILL COST THEM SO, SO, SO MUCH MONEY. WE DON'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT MANY OF THE PLACES YET, AND IF THEY WILL HAVE SUFFERED TOO MUCH DAMAGE TO BE LIVABLE.

I hope not. What's wrong with this Mayor? The residents there should be screaming. I agree with some of these comments. He is completely nuts if he does this. This will bite him in the but down the road. Doesn't seaside heights have enough law suits with their police department problems. Also, I have to say that residents love the beach, doesn't mean we all should continue to pay for all of them to rebuild. Everyone else has to pay for their own rebuild, so should they.
Jeremey Philips November 27, 2012 at 01:48 AM
Yes it is...It is obvious this guy cares about no one but himself and the boardwalk, the heck with all the residents and tourists. Tourist will be paying out of their noses both ways.
Jeremey Philips November 27, 2012 at 01:56 AM
To much money involved not too? For Who? You are a local, so who cares right. Who's paying for all of this? All of us, so the tourists will pay twice.
Greg November 27, 2012 at 05:23 AM
I can't believe the Mayor is contemplating doing this to the Town and the Ocean.

Hello Like you, Im absolutely fed up with what I am hearing. A "Roller Coaster in the Ocean" -Absurd I am a property owner in SSH see another posting I have here http://www.topix.com/forum/city/seaside-heights-nj/TFA77AUIT9B8FMVLJ Anyway, with all eyes on SSH now, I feel it is time to get this administration to listen to our cries. Come summer, the streets are uncontrolled. I have complained for years straight. The POA is useless and the current police don't care. We need to petition and petition loud MEDIA,,,,MEDIA,,,,and MORE MEDIA WHO HERE IS FED UP WITH: *drunks running through the streets until 6 am *Low lifes that walk the streets *dingy hotels and the clients they attract *crime and drugs *vision of the current administrationex (ex.roller coaster to remain) *loud bars and the cute little slap on the wrist they get from the police when complained upon Look at the current administration The seats have been held by their families for years. WE NEED TO SPEAK UP GET THE BARS TO SHUT DOWN AT 12 ENFORCE SOME BASIC HEALTH ORDINANCES AND CLEAN UP THE HOTELS BRING FAMILIES BACK AND ATTRACT YEAR ROUND RESTAURANT OWNERS AND UPSCALE EATERIES SUCH AS ASBURY PARK The town wants the complainers to drift away. they ignore all complaints because many own businesses throughout town. The later the bars are open, the more alcohol they sell. But guess what, we pay the price. Elimminate public urinating, getting sick the

Their is one pier (Casino Pier) in Seaside Heights. The other pier, also mangled and destroyed is (Funtown Pier), in Seaside Park. That's the one that shows the ferris wheel standing in the debris near or in ocean. There were many many rides on that pier mostly for children. I believe that the owner stated only 4 of those rides were left standing of the entire pier. The Funtown Pier, although located in Seaside Park, is actually right at the edge of Seaside Heights, just as you enter the town of Seaside Park. So if you stood in center of boardwalk between the two, they would both be visible, and both were used about the same. The children loved the rides in Seaside Park section, as the rides there were mostly for toddler children. With a few like the ferris wheel and tower of fear and another roller coaster & couple others for adults. You could get tied up onto a slingshot there, and be slung out over the ocean. Wish I could have done that ride, but, dunno if my heart would have been able to withstand it....:) They didn't have that when I was at my ride-going peak...many years ago.

A Resident December 03, 2012 at 05:15 AM
The roller coaster and the pier are privately owned. The Mayor has no say in what happens to it. People....please....learn a little about your town. Knowledge is a great thing.
Jay Gee December 03, 2012 at 06:08 AM
@A Resident....Of course they are, and it's Public knowledge by whom....do you know whom that would be? If so, why didn't you just say, so everyone could "DRINK DEEP "THE SEA OF KNOWLEDGE" WHERE THE OCEAN DRINKS UP THE COASTER OWNED BY THE FAMILY WHO ALSO OWNS UMM, NOW LET'S SEE, UMM WHAT'S UP THE PIKE THERE ON THE WAY OUT OF RT. 35...UMM...WHY MUST PEOPLE INSULT PEOPLE, IF YOU HAVE KNOWLEDGE AND BELIEVE "PEOPLE" SHOULD LEARN ABOUT THEIR DOWN, WHY DIDN'T YOU ENLIGHTEN THEM? THEY MAYOR HAS TOO MUCH TO SAY..BE IT NOT ABOUT THE COASTER, JUST IN GENERAL...THINKS HE IS ONE, I GUESS. BEEN AROUND ALONG TIME...JIMMY DEAN

JG, STOP using all caps -- it's so annoying already!
john December 03, 2012 at 01:36 PM
We have to pay to get onto beaches that should be free and we'll be paying taxzes to fix beaches that are privately held I'm certain.
john December 03, 2012 at 01:40 PM
JG, You're an ignorant poop. All caps is the same as shouting and should be reserved for emphasis. Are you too lazy to hit Shift? You freakin' wish I would support you but you're too ignorant to realize that you're annoying. You can kiss my Irish arse.

Where are you in Fla? NJ's not freaking cause we have no alligators that eat people, humidity you can carve with a knife, funky water, and no cockroaches as big as your head! Unfortunately, what we do have most of is corruption (still), unbearably high property taxes, high car insurance premiums, and 7% sales tax.
