HARROGATE HOSTS INAUGURAL OCEAN COUNTY COLLEGE ACADEMY FOR LIFELONG LEARNING SENIOR SCHOLARS PROGRAM

LAKEWOOD, N.J., August 29, 2013 - Recently, as a part of an on-going partnership with Ocean County College (OCC), Harrogate, a Life Care Continuing Care Retirement Community in Ocean County, hosted the inaugural Senior Scholars program. The Senior Scholars program, an OCC Academy for Lifelong Learning initiative, provides area residents with the opportunity to continue their education during a lecture style series.

“At Harrogate, we are strong believers in continuing one’s education throughout all stages of life. We provide our employees with scholarship opportunities, have assisted area high school students in raising scholarship money through our Jeopardy tournament and participate in Ocean County Vocational Technical School’s internship program,” states Don Johansen, Executive Director at Harrogate. “By partnering with Ocean County College Lifelong Learning’s Senior Scholar program, we are excited to be able to offer area seniors with a venue to continue their education and maintain an active lifestyle.”

During the three-day educational series, Ocean County residents participated in workshops and seminars given by Dr. Maysa Hayward, OCC Dean of e-Learning; Dr. Ali Botein-Furrevig, OCC Assistant Professor of English & Literature; John Knight, OCC Adjunct Instructor of Humanities & Fine Arts; Dr. Robert Hodges, OCC Senior Scholar Lecturer; and Donna Parsons, OCC Senior Scholar Lecturer.

As a part of Dr. Botein-Furrevig’s presentation, attendees received an education on Lakewood’s 200 year history, which included the town’s transition from a lumber and mill town to a posh resort town for the rich and famous. Additionally, she focused on how Lakewood became a safe haven for Eastern European farmers, and discussed how the migration of Jews escaping persecution from Hitler and World War II impacted the area and molded Lakewood into what is today.

During Dr. Hodges’ presentation, he provided attendees with a history on the Earth’s climate change, and focused on how carbon emissions within the past century have impacted greenhouse gases and weather patterns.

Other topics addressed during the Senior Scholars program included:
“The present Middle East. Challenges and the case of Egypt.” presented by Dr. Hayward
“What is Health Information Technology?” presented by Mr. Knight
“Social Media: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” presented by Ms. Parsons

“I am so pleased to have this important relationship with Harrogate, the premiere retirement community in Ocean County,” said Dr. Jon H. Larson, President of Ocean County College. “We are grateful for Harrogate’s continued support of OCC’s Academy for Lifelong Learning and appreciate the opportunity to hold joint events at their site for additional community events for our senior population.”

Due to the positive response received from this year’s Senior Scholars program, Harrogate and OCC plan to host a spring and fall Senior Scholars program in 2014. The next lecture series is scheduled for April 2014.
