To celebrate the Toms River community and showcase rebuilding and sustainability efforts, Verizon will offer residents free tree at event; Mayor Kelaher will deliver remarksSeptember 17, 2013: Verizon competed against more than 3,000 schools, businesses and government facilities across the country in the Environmental Protection Agency’s ’s 2012 ENERGYSTAR® National Building Competition.

Billed as “The Battle of the Buildings”, this annual initiative challenges facilities to see
which can most reduce its energy usage in one year.

Verizon Wireless’ Toms River store met that challenge and saved the most energy among all competing retail stores in the nation.  In addition to implementing ENERGY STAR tips for retail store efficiency, building managers deployed energy conscious LED lighting, upgraded insulation, energy management systems and added reflective window film.  All told, they reduced energy use by more than 43 percent. Together, all competitors cut their energy costs by more than $50 million and reduced greenhouse gas emissions equal to the amount of electricity used by more than 43,000 homes.  In addition to the Toms River, NJ store,Verizon’s contribution to those totals also came from stores in Rochester Hills, MI, Pittsburgh, PA and Marion, IL. In response to the stores’ energy savings, Verizon chief sustainability officer Jim Gowen shared, “At the core of our sustainability program is our commitment to “Shared Success,” an integrated approach driving both business development and corporate responsibility efforts.  We are pleased to host an open house for this community to share information about our energy conservation program as well as provide free trees as symbols of our ongoing commitment.”

The public is invited to help celebrate this achievement and celebrate rebuilding and sustainability efforts with Toms River Mayor Thomas Kelaher and Verizon executives at a special open house event on September 24 from 10am – 12pm at the Verizon Wireless Toms River store.  Through Verizon’s partnership with NJ Tree Foundation, the first 98 attendees will receive a free sapling to plant at their home.  This tree giveaway is a preview of a series of tree plantings and giveaways sponsored by the National Football League and the NY/NJ Super Bowl XLVIII Host Committee in partnership with Verizon in which more than 27,000 trees and shrubs will be planted in New York and New Jersey in honor of the upcoming 2014 Super Bowl.
