What is "Communism?"

A few days ago I looked the the Oberver-Reporter and read an article about the school election change. I got to a point in the article when I almost broke down in laughter. A man was interviewed and he accused the Toms River Board of Education of being communists. Although I myself am not a great fan of the board of education I couldn't quit laughing at this accusation. Does this guy even know what a communist is? Does anyone know? Communist and Communism are terms thrown around in America more than they probably were in Soviet Russia. According to the dictionary

Communism, noun

a theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state.

or a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self-perpetuating political party.

I dont think any of those match the Board of Education, or as it's more thrown at, President Obama. If we went along with what many people believe communism is, we'd all be communists. Having to go to work is Communism, because your boss tells you what to do and you have no say correct? Thats communism. State law says you can pass on the right side of the road, thats communism. Telling women they cant get an abortion? Sorry folks, that communist. A government not allowing gay marriage because of religion? Thats communist too. If you havent gotten where im going with this yet, my point is that the term "Communist" and "Communism" are overly mis-used. If we go by what everyone thinks a communist is, then we are ALL communists. A communist government would only allow one religion, a dicatorship, no freedom of speech, no freedom of press and would even persecute others. I've seen none of that.
