It's Arbor Day- Plant a Tree!

This REALTOR® wants to help you improve the "curb appeal" of your home.

A lot has been written about the importance of a home’s “curb appeal”. Basically it’s the first impression you get when you drive up to a home- does it look appealing and well cared for? Is it the kind of home you’d like to live in some day?

“Curb appeal” isn’t something you should start to think of when you plan to sell your home. It should be an ongoing series of improvements, not just to make your home more attractive to others, but also so you can get the most enjoyment out of coming home every day.

The last Friday of April is Arbor Day, a day when individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. What a perfect time to improve your home’s “curb appeal” by planting a tree! Spring is a great time for planting, and the garden centers are full of flowering trees, evergreens, and other deciduous trees. Stand in front of your home and think about a spot that could use a bit of color, or where you’d like to reduce a bit of street noise. If nothing comes to mind, walk around the sides and back of your home and do the same thing.

If you haven’t planted a tree or a shrub in a while, the folks at the garden centers will be glad to give you some tips. You’ll probably need some peat moss and a bag of manure, so plan to buy everything at once. Water it well right after you’ve planted it, and make sure you water it at least weekly if there hasn’t been a good rain.

If you’re like me, you can’t think of Arbor Day without remembering Joyce Kilmer’s wonderful poem, “Trees”. Here’s a link to one of my September 2011 posts that has the complete poem: http://rumsonfairhavenhome.wordpress.com/2011/09/28/trees/.

By the way, did you know that Toms River is part of the “Tree City USA” program?
