At the beginning of Second Peter, Peter had been reflecting on his experience on the Mount of Transfiguration. He was part of a select group of three who saw Jesus transfigured before their very eyes.

Peter had witnessed Jesus' face shining like lightning and His clothing radiating like the sun. He also experienced seeing Moses and Elijah appear before Jesus and watched as they began conversing with Him. Peter emphasized how he had personally heard God speak to Jesus from a cloud saying, "This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased..." (Matthew 3:17).

Peter's congregation must have felt honored to not only have one of the original twelve disciples as their pastor but even more so, knowing he was one of the three men who formed Jesus' inner circle friends. But as wonderful as these experiences were to Peter, he explained to his congregation that there was something more powerful than having an open vision or hearing God speak from heaven. It is the Word of God, "... a more sure word."

Not every believer will have a vision or hear God speak audibly in this lifetime, but everyone can have the Word of God. The Word must always be our final authority. If what we see with our eyes contradicts God's Word, we should go with the Word. If what we hear with our ears contradicts the Word, we should choose to agree with the Word.

Peter was simply reminding his congregation to place the Word of God as the highest priority in their lives. Psalm 138:2 says that God has magnified His Word even above His own name! Circumstances can never change the promises of God, but the promises of God can change circumstances. Heaven and earth will pass away, but God's Word will never change.

Why don't you choose today to make the Word of God the foundation for your life? Choose it over your own eyes, ears, thoughts or feelings. Your financial problem will not last forever; neither will your sickness or depression. They are temporary. But the Word of God will abide forever! Take the eternal Word and believe it over your temporary problem. The eternal will change the temporary.
