CHADD's Seminar on ADHD in Pre-School Ages Give Parents and Childcare Providers Some New Techniques and Methods To Use

Eva O’Malley, coordinator of the Monmouth & Ocean chapter, spoke to a group that included child caregivers and parents seeking information and tools that could help them better handle young children with ADHD.

“I didn’t know about the under developed frontal lobe and I got resources of books to read,” said Elizabeth Burakmance, mother of a 5-year-old who she says has shown signs of ADHD. Burakmance came with two of her son’s teachers from Peppermint Tree Preschool and Westminster Nursery & Kindergarten.

O’Malley shared a wealth of information centered on solution-based methods and teachings for parents and caregivers of pre-school aged children. One approach she suggested is to “ get the child involved in being the architect of the solution,” to help children learn to communicate what they need and make decisions that are interdependent with their parents. She explained, “Kids will behave, if they have the skills to do so.” At the end O’Malley offered a list of websites for parents and childcare professionals which includes resources such as www.LivesInTheBalance.org.
