What Did You Think of the Fire Referendum?

Our Question of the Day

The referendum is over, and but what are your thoughts on how the voting was handled?

The polls numbered one, down from three in the district as are opened during the annual fire election in February. Yet with only serving as a polling place, the voter turnout was signicantly higher compared to

Why do you think more people managed to come to vote on a Thursday in December than did on a Saturday in February?

Why should a councilman be double-dipping as a fire district administrator? Kubiel botched this hurried plan to rip off taxpayers without disclosing all the facts about the overpriced land, the neighborhood impact, etc. This is a turning point in Toms River! The people have awakened and will no longer meekly accept what the political cronies want to do with taxpayers' money. The PAID fire commissioners are due for a rude awakening in their February election, and so are the Ritacco pals on the school board and the incumbents on the township council in 2012. Good riddance! Let's build the grassroots movement in Toms River to move all those arrogant politicians into retirement. Not even the party bosses can save them when the citizens rise up in force.

Yes i believe the people of toms river new how the fire department played the game. This was the same game that the school tried to do when they new few people would come out week before christmas.Time now to move elections to November and have the majority of the people decide instead of only firemen voting. Also i agree with martin on why Kubiel is double dipping when the fire department and the town are separate.Town cannot tell the fire department what to do yet Kubiel represents the town and fire department.

They're not done yet, when they say they are going to revisit this in the future. When you plan a project has big and as ugly as this and in a historic and very nice neighborhood you have to wonder who are the people who benefit from this deal, and it's not the town's people.Glad this got voted even though they used everything at their disposal to get it passed

They NOW have awakened " the sleeping Dog" The above will be DELT with...No double dipping and the Board is NOW under the microscope and so are the Commish's.. Why do we have three ???? How much is earned and what benefits are paid...How much money do they control ???????? You asked for this , now your going to answer a lot of questions....

Not to change the topic but what happened to all the comments on the APP.They seemed to have dissapeared.Would like to have read some on this topic also.

You'd have to ask them, walt tupycia.

Unfortunately, they bundled the generator, which is needed to keep emergency services working during hurricanes and nor'easters, with the land purchase. I believe a lot of people just came in with "no" in their mind and voted no on everything, without thinking. Of course, if this had been presented to the public on a paper ballot before the vote, they may have had time to think about it.

The APP adopted a policy where you can only post via your Facebook account. It has been proven that Facebook spies on its users, therefore I for one refuse to sign up. Read more here: http://www.itworld.com/security/207473/facebook-finds-another-way-claim-its-protecting-your-privacy-while-it-spies-you The APP is also notorious for deleting comments and accounts of alleged violators without notice or explanation. They have a serious problem with the 1st amendment at the APP, especially f you substantiate your views with links to legitimate sources.

The PD and Schools have backup Generators , how many more do we need ???? @ $50,000 a piece ???? The days were every dang Dept. gets there own are over, learn to share & think before you spend our tax money like drunken sailors ( sorry sailors you got a bad rap ) Army Sarge... You know what I mean ! Make believe it's YOUR money and spend carefully , more KW if necessary but one !

I may be wrong, but I do not think the individual firefighters should be blamed for this poorly thought out move. To my knowledge the firefighters do not want to move. This project was the idea of the Disrict 1 administration who wanted to build themselve an administrative center on the back of the two fire companies. Not only should the voters look closely at who they vote for in the next fire commissioner election but also the firefighters should remember who tried to do this to them.
Mr. ? December 16, 2011 at 03:18 PM
They just don't get it ! People are tired of inadequate , insufficient, and abusive government. They have spoken, as in the defeat of this referendum and at last year's TR school district board of education results. The campaign by the status quo, the Commissioners and the BID and the Mayor and Council, failed miserably in trying to spin the campaign by the opponents to defeat this referendum, saying it was "misinformation" and "falsehoods". They themselves begrudged the firemen! The questions and concerns presented were valid and went mostly unanswered. They tried to make the dissention into a political issue, saying the Democrats were conducting an anti campaign! Not true, Mr Kubiel and you knew it. Wonder if the voter registration list states a fire district voter as Republican or Democrat? The Republicans may find that to be very interesting and distressful! Talk about opening a can of worms!
GaryNJ85 December 16, 2011 at 04:27 PM
Yes the PD and Schools have generators but not at the fire academy, Where the back-up communications are. If the PD generator doesn't fire (which from my understanding, is very likely) you don't have emergency communications and dispatch capabilities. And due to the fact that Toms River is self-dispatched on a higher quality system than ocean county's radio room, the county can not just assume communications and dispatch capabilities if the perverbial s**t hits the fan. The generator should have passed.

how about cell phones for communciations? What have the been using for the past 100years.
walt tupycia December 16, 2011 at 05:32 PM
Getting back to Kubiel looks like all the democrats came out to vote and all the republicans stayed home.Republicians out number democrats 2 to 1.So where were the republicians. They probably thought that this was going to be rubber stamped. At least the polling place was not put up at mount everest.Remember they only needed one.
Ken G December 16, 2011 at 07:11 PM
They dont have a problem with the first ammendment. There was no comments section so to speak, it was just political bashing, biggotry, and hateful comments. They know that if you want to make a threat again they now have your real name and can call the authorities if a threat or such is made.
walt tupycia December 17, 2011 at 12:10 AM
this will come up again in february they will say they got a good deal at 596k this is what the crap property was assesed at.something smells.I would not give you 100k for this crap. Why were they willing to pay double for a property that has a lein on it.Toms river tax site states there is a lein on this property.
GaryNJ85 December 17, 2011 at 12:16 AM
It was two seperate parcals of property. The williamson piece and the discovery financial piece. Williamson was assessed at 596K and the discovery I believe was 436K.
walt tupycia December 17, 2011 at 12:19 AM
also i would still like to know where this money is coming from.Spend a million dollars he still will not tell you who will pay for this.Very secret. No tax increase.I would like the town to use the same program when they raise taxes tax rate will not change.Must be some new software program.
walt tupycia December 17, 2011 at 12:28 AM

cw1234 December 17, 2011 at 08:44 PM
How would a generator at the PD or at the schools, power the equipment where they had planned to put this generator?
Mr. ? December 17, 2011 at 11:02 PM
You are right GaryNJ85. It failed and you can blame that on Kubeil and company. The generator failed by only 30 votes. Interesting that P.O'd voters were just plain pi**ed, and voted no. it also shows how many firemen voted, and voted no on the consolidation, because you know they voted yes for the generator. But don't fret, as it will be included in the budget for 2012 in February. Probably as a separate vote on that ballot. Just hope that budget is appropriate and fiscally prudent and the administration plays no games. It would be interesting if it failed and would then be put before the Council.
Martin December 17, 2011 at 11:22 PM
Patch, please do a follow-up story so poor Councilman/Fire Administrator/political hack Kubiel can blame somebody else for HIS terrible job of trying to put one over on voters and taxpayers. I can't wait for his latest "spin." Even the fire chiefs, firefighters and Mayor are hanging him out to dry by himself on this FIASCO. Some important questions remain: How much did the special (A.K.A. sneaky) election cost taxpayers? How much did Kubiel's lawyer charge to do the preliminary property acquisition negotiations and ballot wording? How much does Kubiel earn for his second part-time job as administrator? How much does each of the 3 fire commissioners get? Are they members of the Republican Club? Just a coincidence, I'm sure.
