71-Year-Old Woman Dragged Through Supermarket Parking Lot

Man grabbed purse, and woman sustained head injury

A Toms River woman was dragged 40 feet after a man in a car drove past and grabbed her purse outside a Route 37 supermarket this afternoon.

The 71-year-old woman was in the parking lot around 4 p.m. Monday when a white man driving a dark vehicle reached out and grabbed her purse, said Chief Michael Mastronardy.

With the purse twisted over her shoulder, the woman was dragged for 40 feet before managing to free herself, said the police chief.

The suspect is still at large. Police are looking for a white man, approximately 30 years old, with short brown hair, driving a dark vehicle last seen driving westbound on Route 37 at high speeds.

The victim’s beige purse contained about $50 and credit cards, Mastronardy said.
