Alleged Burglary Spree Had Accomplices Selling Stolen Goods in Toms River

Michael Rose lodged in Ocean County Jail

A Brick man who has been held for months in the Ocean County Jail has been indicted on a slew of charges alleging numerous burglaries and thefts in Brick last year. Two others indicted last week are charged with allegedly selling jewelry and other materials from Rose's alleged victims in Toms River and Lakewood.

Michael E. Rose, 25, of Dartmoor Road was indicted alongside two Bayville residents by an Ocean County grand jury last week and accused of 12 counts of burglary, seven counts of theft, one count of attempted burglary and one count of criminal mischief.

Rose targeted homes in the Greenbriar II adult community, police have said, and was after an alert resident saw Rose running and alerted security, who called police.

Rose initially admitted to six burglaries in Greenbriar when interviewed by detectives at the Monmouth County Jail, where he was being held on a contempt of court warrant out of Neptune. But last week's indictment alleges burglaries of at least eight homes, with two being targeted more than once:

  • 12 Dartmoor Road, between Aug. 1 and Sept. 29, as well as Sept. 28 to Sept. 29 and Nov. 1 to Nov. 10;
  • 16 Piedmont Court, Sept. 28;
  • 16 Dartmoor Road, Sept. 27 to Oct. 2;
  • 2 Vernon Court, Oct. 4;
  • 18 Rushmore Drive, Oct. 7 to Oct. 8;
  • 5 Olympus Way, Sept. 1 to Sept. 23;
  • 73 Green Briar Boulevard, Sept. 1 to Nov. 10, as well as Nov. 1;
  • 130 Everest Drive South, Oct. 25 to Nov. 1.

Rose also is accused of attempting to burglarize 6 Dartmoor Road in September.

Authorities said he largely stole cash and jewelry when breaking into homes.

Donna J. Otlowski, 29, and Gary D. Bankes, 42, both of Bayville also both allegedly participated in the schemes. Otlowski was indicted on a dealing in stolen property charge for allegedly selling jewelry Rose stole.

Bankes and Rose worked together to burglarize 130 Everest Drive South between Oct. 25 and Nov. 1, the indictment states, and stole copper water pipes having a value in excess of $500.

Bankes also was accused of burglarizing four Lakewood homes in November, as well as dealing in stolen property for allegedly selling jewelry from Rose's alleged victims in Toms River and Lakewood.

Bankes and Otlowski were released on summonses. Rose has been held in lieu of $50,000 bail, no 10 percent option allowed.
