Ex-Toms River Regional Teacher: Six Years In Prison For Sex Relationship With Boy, 15

A 32-year-old Barnegat woman and former Toms River Regional schoolteacher who admitted that she had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy has been sentenced to six years in state prison.

Erin T. Haskell, who was free on $300,000 cash bail, was immediately remanded to prison authorities to begin serving her sentence.

Haskell pleaded guilty last year to a charge of second degree sexual assault before Superior Court Judge Francis Hodgson.

Dressed neatly in a gray skirt and jacket, Haskell appeared in court in August and timidly responded “yes” to several questions asked by Hodgson as well as her attorney, Bradley Billhimer during the five minute-long proceeding.

Haskell admitted to having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old minor, identified only by his initials, between June 2012 and Sept. 2012. The sexual activities occurred in both Beachwood, where she taught and Barnegat, her hometown.

Prosecutors said at the hearing that they would seek a seven year-long prison term for Haskell. Billhimer said he would ask for three.

As part of the plea agreement, Hodgson said, Haskell will have to register as a sex offender under Meghan’s Law for life, and she will remain under lifetime parole supervision. She will also relinquish her teaching license at sentencing.

Haskell, who taught at Intermediate School South in Beachwood, was charged in Nov. 2012 with having an inappropriate relationship with one of her students, then-prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford said at the time.

She was originally charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and exhibiting obscene material to a minor.

State pension records showed Haskell having worked as a Spanish teacher with a masters degree and eight years experience at the time her employment was suspended by the Toms River Regional school district. Her salary at the time was $54,800.

The case was investigated by Detective Melissa Matthews of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and Sgt. Glen DeMarco of the Beachwood Police Department.  The case was prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Kristin L. Pressman.

I agree

I agree Gina BUT did anyone wonder WHY a 15 year old is still doing in Jr HS? My bet is this kid is not one a parent would be proud of. It still DOES NOT excuse this teacher doing what she did
jasperpointpl February 10, 2014 at 06:22 PM
Paul, What in tarnation are you talking about? 15 years olds are 100% in HS. Should a 15 yr old be in college? Typically you start HS at around 13-14 and graduate around 17-18. Maybe you got the age wrong. In any event, man I went to 12 years of Catholic school and had mostly nun's in grade school. There was this one lay teacher however in 8th grade. nevermind, never got that lucky

He was not 15 by the way.
Gina February 10, 2014 at 06:26 PM
However old he is! He obviously was a student and MINOR! She is 32?! Gross! I'm only 26, but I would NEVER even look at an 18 year old "man", cause to me - that's still a little BOY.
Sue February 10, 2014 at 06:48 PM
The student was (is?) in Intermediate School, like a junior high school referred to by the commenter above. Didn't get to HS by age 15.

There's a younger photo of the teacher on app.com. Her mug shot is more up to date and less attractive, but maybe the 15-year-old wasn't fussy.

Another case of a willing participant (the kid) who just had to screw the pooch and flap his pie-hole about his 'conquest'. Let's face it, at 15 you're having sex anyway with other 15 year-olds. He worked himself into what he thought was a great score and then yapped to too many people...and the whole thing went south. Sure...totally against the law....but don't kid yourself....the kid could have been the hunter in this one. Sophomore year when I was 15....I had the hots for my Spanish teacher and I would have easily gone for her if I thought I could. Newsflash...15 year old boys are the farthest thing from innocent. He'll look back at this when he's 25 and say jeez, I'm sorry she got jammed up because of me. That's the reality of these deals...

you know this is a really touchy subject, if i wouldve slept with one of my teachers when i was 15 or 16 i wouldnve thought i was molested or abused but, she shouldve known the law and known the maturity of this young man

I believe that the boy is currently about 15 and in high school, but he was about 13 and in middle school when this happened! Disgusting either way!!

You guys are in such a hurry to write your stupid comments, you don't even read the whole article. It doesn't say the kid was in Jr High, it says she taught Jr. High. For the ones who say he wasn't 15, show us some proof, or stop making stuff up.

Boy they sure threw this overpaid baby sitter under the bus.....guess her dad is not a school administrator..... not bad looking is usually good enough for a slap on wrist Oh well sheep, make sure you keep paying those property taxes
Jennifer Giblin-Cirz February 10, 2014 at 10:45 PM
This happened a year and a half ago (read the article it says between may of 2012-sept 2012) so yes he was in jr high and is now in HS.

I was a 15 year old guy at one time in my life, and yes~ at that age, our male hormones are overflowing, and so in a way, I can relate to what this 15-year-old did. However, on the other hand, this "teacher" (who is an adult), should have known better, and therefore, she should be punished for her stupidity and for her actions!
Brainley February 11, 2014 at 04:16 AM
Only 54k with 8 years in AND a masters degree! There's the other crime in this story.
letsgetreal February 11, 2014 at 06:30 AM
Oh my god....does it really matter the age of the kid...obviously he was young enough at the time to make this a crime. Amazing....LOL
Mattie February 11, 2014 at 10:35 AM
We really need to revamp our sex crimes laws. The article makes it sound as if the boy was 15 at the time of the "crime". 15 is not a "child". 15 is *physically* nearly adult if puberty has been experienced. Even though he is a minor, **IF** there was no coercion, **IF** there was no bribery, force or overt manipulation involved, and this teenager decided to get sex wherever he could, and *willingly* engages in it with someone older- that really shouldn't be a "crime" with prison time. IMO. Some sort of punishment for the teacher? Yes, for sure. Mental evaluation? Yes, again, without question... but prison - for 6 years?? Way over the line. And yes, I'd feel the same way if the 'victim' was a female...

ive met the kid before he liked it and damn straight i would if i were in his situation
Linda Maloney February 11, 2014 at 12:10 PM
NJ law has provisions that apply to persons who have "Supervisory or Disciplinary Power" over the victim, which includes teachers. NJ Rev. State. Sec 2C:14-2 and Sec2C:14-3. This teacher clearly violated the law.

no wonder Spanish is referred to as the easiest language to champion - perhaps we should require English teachers to teach foreign languages in our schools also - that way our school children will learn that there is an exception to everything they embrace
Linda Maloney February 11, 2014 at 12:38 PM
@Mac Espanol es el idioma mas facil de aprender!
Mac February 11, 2014 at 01:58 PM
@Linda - wish I had tried it first - perhaps my quest to learn a foreign language would have been less traumatic on my sheltered life prior to my freshman year of high school – my Latin teacher was more interested in his southern hands on approach to language education and after I switched to French, my French teacher got down on his hands and knees and pleaded with me to never divulge who taught me to not speak French – I would have preferred female instructors myself but that could just be me – it was a time before ‘high fives’ got one into the advanced classes and school teachers were simply transferred to the clergy
