Black Ice Blamed in Accident That Shut Down Whitty Road
The driver of a vehicle that hit a utility pole, causing wires to topple and shut down Whitty Road for several hours on Tuesday told police black ice was to blame for the accident.
Fortunately, police said Wednesday, no one was injured in the accident.
Brandon J. Vargas, of South Toms River, was driving his 2004 white Chevrolet eastbound on Whitty when his vehicle slid, crossed over the center yellow line and left the roadway, striking a telephone pole, according to police spokesman Ralph Stocco.
The pole snapped in half and came to rest across the roadway with live power wires being exposed, Stocco said. Jersey Central Power and Light responded to replace the pole, which led to a three hour-long closure of the road.
No charges were filed in the accident.
