Bicyclist Struck near Routes 571 and 9

Incident reported around 9 a.m., helicopter transport of victim reported.

A pedestrian was reportedly been struck near the intersection of Routes 571 and 9 by the Garden State Parkway entrance in Toms River, around 9 a.m. this morning.

A witness reported to Toms River Patch that a man with a bicycle was struck near the on-ramp to the Garden State Parkway, near Route 9 and 571. The witness said he saw the man and his bicycle lying on the ground near the entry ramp southbound, and the man's belongings had scattered across the roadway.

The Monoc 1 helicopter was requested to fly for serious injuries to the victim, and motorists were urged to avoid the area as emergency responders investigated this morning.

Traffic slowed at the major intersection and backed up in each direction of both state highway Route 9 and county road Route 571.

Closing the major roadways snarled traffic on roads known as Route 166, Lakewood Road, Bey Lea Road and Ridgeway Road.

Traffic was at a standstill heading northbound starting near Route 37 and Route 166.

The parkway entrances were inaccessible on Route 9 in Toms River, which is less than a quarter mile near the accident. Parkway motorists were advised to use the Route 37 entrances to access the parkway.

This is a breaking news report. Stay tuned for further details.

I saw the accident. He was hit on the entry ramp to the parkway south by Home Depot. Not at the intersection(s) listed above. It happened at 8:47 this morning. Two cars were stopped on the ramp north of the downed man. 3 or 4 cars were stopped blocking access to the Parkway south. His bike and belongings were all over the ramp. The girl who hit him was being held by a guy, and no one was near the victim. I called 911 right away. Cpl-USMC

Probably talking on her cell at the time with Lady Gaga blasting the woofers out. She'll cry about the damage to her car, jail time, legal fees, and lost license....but no tears for the victim. That's the kind of shallow, vapid kids we have in our society today.

I just want to say "Thank You", sir for calling 911. This man is someone's family member. I would want someone's help if I was in that position. Was the driver talking, testing , or reading while driving? I have seen a man driving on 37 west and looked to my right and he had the newspaper folded up on the steering wheen while he read the paper!!! Hope the man is ok and the driver is held accountable! Thank you also to the man who detained the driver!

I meant texting NOT testing.

The guy was crossing the ramp illegally....he actually initiated contact with the woman's car! She was not detained by a guy, she was in shock at the events.... it is amazing how fast people pass judgment without knowing the facts.
