Bicyclist Struck near Routes 571 and 9

Incident reported around 9 a.m., helicopter transport of victim reported.

A pedestrian was reportedly been struck near the intersection of Routes 571 and 9 by the Garden State Parkway entrance in Toms River, around 9 a.m. this morning.

A witness reported to Toms River Patch that a man with a bicycle was struck near the on-ramp to the Garden State Parkway, near Route 9 and 571. The witness said he saw the man and his bicycle lying on the ground near the entry ramp southbound, and the man's belongings had scattered across the roadway.

The Monoc 1 helicopter was requested to fly for serious injuries to the victim, and motorists were urged to avoid the area as emergency responders investigated this morning.

Traffic slowed at the major intersection and backed up in each direction of both state highway Route 9 and county road Route 571.

Closing the major roadways snarled traffic on roads known as Route 166, Lakewood Road, Bey Lea Road and Ridgeway Road.

Traffic was at a standstill heading northbound starting near Route 37 and Route 166.

The parkway entrances were inaccessible on Route 9 in Toms River, which is less than a quarter mile near the accident. Parkway motorists were advised to use the Route 37 entrances to access the parkway.
