Burglary Robs Toms River Church of $1K

Suspect entered through window after removing air conditioner

An overnight burglary of a Toms River church took more than $1,000 in a safe, after a suspect entered through a window, police said.

The Church of the Nazarene, , was burglarized sometime Sunday night into Monday morning, said Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy.

The police chief said the suspect entered through a window, removing an air conditioner.

"Typically you'd unscrew the air conditioner from its brackets with a screwdriver and climb in," Mastronardy said. "We do not have any suspect info or information on why the church was targeted."

He said the money wasn't taken from a collection box and was instead from a safe in the office.

It's unknown whether the burglary was the handiwork of one or multiple suspects, Mastronardy said.

"Right now this is an open investigation," he said. "We're encouraging anyone to call in news tips who may have seen anything."

The brickface church fronts Route 37 West between Deer Chase Manor and the Oak Ridge Estates in Toms River.

Toms River Officer Frank Bopp, Detective Mark Bajada and the Ocean County Sheriffs Office are handling the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call Toms River Capt. Bruce Burgess 732-349-0150 ext. 1200.

It shows how low people can go. Even the house of god is not safe.

They should have taken the AC unit, too. It's hot where they're going.

Wow TR is getting bad....I guess thats what happens when you have inadequate police who catch nobody. Thieves tend to take notice when nobody gets caught...it becomes the popular thing to do
. July 19, 2012 at 06:44 PM
Apparently you haven't read about the thieves that has been caught lately. I think Toms River Police do a pretty good job.....and no, I am not a cop, married to a cop, related to a cop, or even know a cop personally for that matter. Unfortunately, it isn't just Toms River. It is all over.

There was 1 arrest which resulted from a Holiday City burglary...the person turned himself in. Amazing police work there. I happen to know quite a few officers. There is a lot more that goes on in this town which doesn't get reported in an effort to prevent public fear. TR is not the sweat little town it once was and the police do not know how to handle it.

Well said agree 100% except for the sweat should be sweet

The story says 'Took more than $1000 from IN the safe'. So we have a safe cracker, which is unlikely. Or someone knew there was money IN the safe and knew the combination. This is no ordinary robbery.

Tr is becoming a terrible place, especially when most of the news that is reported, is terrible and bad news...
Hector Logan July 20, 2012 at 03:36 AM
Only thing getting worse than crime in Toms River is the level quality in the local blogosphere.
. July 20, 2012 at 03:46 AM
First you say there aren't any police, yet you know quite a few of them.....so which is it? Apparently, you know nothing of what you write! There were a few more arrests than 1 in Holiday City.

The following story is right here in The Patch for you to read. "Five Toms River Residents Indicted in String of Burglaries "

Yes, cranky people with nothing better to do than criticize everything!

...and most of them can't spell or even think coherently, unless they spout the same dribble they've seen on Fixed News.
barbara July 20, 2012 at 01:12 PM
Such a low life - hope they catch the person.

@ CHANGE_TR - Toms River's not getting bad it's been bad. Just ask the "quite a few officers" you know, I'm sure they appreciate they bashing they take from you. The crime doesn't get reported because of your politicians, not the police - on the flip side you're also not privy to all the arrests they make & the work they do behind the scenes.
