Business Burglarized, Boat Batteries Stolen in Toms River

Suspected thief seen passing man's house got away with batteries without him noticing

Police were investigating the burglary of a township business and the theft of a boat battery from a township resident's property on Monday.

The burglary of Café Italia on Route 37 occurred sometime early Monday morning, Chief Michael Mastronardy said.

A suspect or suspects forced entry of an east side door then attempted, unsuccessfully, to enter a metal cash box, Mastronardy said. The suspects fled without any proceeds but caused over $250 damage in their attempted theft.

The second incident occurred around 1 p.m. Monday afternoon on Coca Court in the township's Chadwick Beach section.

A resident reported a white male in a red or burgundy four door Dodge or Chrysler removed two deep cycle boat batteries from his property, Mastronardy said.

The victim told police that he observed the suspect get out of his car but didn’t realize he removed the boat batteries, worth $250, until he went to retrieve them to put them into his boat.

Officer Dennis Mansfield is investigating.
