Brick Woman Attempted to Run Over Security Following Mall Theft, Police Say

Charges stem from incident on January 16.

A Brick woman faces several charges from an incident at the Freehold Raceway Mall last week.

Shamera Whitfield, 20is charged with shoplifting for allegedly taking more than $500 worth of merchandise from several stores in the mall on January 16. She is then alleged to have attempted to hide the merchandise in green plastic bags that were put under a 2-year-old in a stroller.

After putting the items in the stroller Whitfield reportedly attempted to flee from the mall. She is charged with robbery as a result of the incident as well. Court papers indicate she attempted to use her vehicle against a uniformed mall security officer who was on foot and “ramming said vehicle into a marked mall security vehicle occupied by two uniformed all security officers.”

Whitfield is also charged with endangering the welfare of a child for her actions during the attempted theft. Whitfield is alleged to have been seen “tossing,” the 2-year-old into the back of her car with the other items she had stolen and driving recklessly in an attempt to leave the mall while the child was not wearing a proper safety restraint.

She also faces charges of committing an act or using a juvenile during the commission of the crime for using the child to hide the stolen items.

As a result of attempting to injure the officers with her car Whitfield is also charged with criminal aggravated assault. She is also charged with criminal mischief for causing more than $2000 worth of damages to the vehicles she hit while attempting to leave the scene.
