Cops: Toms River Man, 18, Shot Mother's Ex-Boyfriend With BB Gun

A Toms River man has been charged in the BB gun assault of a man described as his mother's ex-boyfriend.

Police began investigating after finding the man, who was not identified by name, passed out in the bathroom of a Wawa store on Route 37 around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The man, police spokesman Ralph Stocco said, was intoxicated and bleeding at the time.

An investigation showed that the man, earlier in the night, had gone to his ex-girlfriend’s home on the 500 block of Woodland Avenue and passed out on the lawn, only to find awake to Jacob Weightman, 18, shooting him with a BB gun, Stocco said.

The victim was treated for minor wounds to his forehead, face, and shoulder, Stcco said.

Weightman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon and released on $75,000 bail.

Once again...not enough information in the article. Maybe the mother was scared of the guy and the son only wanted to scare the guy off. Maybe there was a more powerful gun in the house and the son thought he was doing the smart thing. Whatever...he should have had bail set at around $5K or released on his own recognizance pending a court date.

@hurlster I comprehend a vast amount of things yes you can kill someone with just about anything. I dont think Id compare 12 gauge with bb gun way more laws regarding owning one over the other. Article stated unlawful possession not unlawful use. Many laws on the books allow someone to shoot trespassers. As another stated many details missing

@ Bayville res. Im not attacking you but it is amazing how little people know about gun laws in NJ. But a BB gun requires the same permit as a handgun. I tried to get one for my son and found this out. To get a shotgun the requirements are less than a handgun. This is one crazy state!
