Police say alert neighbor freed couple, in Rivercrest Manor section of Toms River

A Toms River couple was tied up by three men in ski masks armed with handguns who ransacked their Rivercrest Manor home before midnight, police said.

Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said a neighbor freed the husband and wife, victims of a home invasion robbery, after the neighbor became suspicious.

Mastronardy said three men, wearing ski masks and showing handguns, entered the rear of the home, rushed to the bedroom and awoke a 66-year-old husband and 56-year-old wife who were sleeping.

The couple was tied up for about 30 minutes, said the police chief, as the three armed men raided the home off Mapletree Road.

The men fled in two vehicles, a witness reported to police. The witness, Mastronardy said, was checking his mail from his mailbox at the end of his driveway and noticed suspicious activity and called police.

The neighbor then entered the home and found the two victims tied up, and freed them. Mastronardy said no injuries were reported and the couple refused medical attention.

The police chief said a large amount of cash and jewelry was stolen.

No description of the three men or the two vehicles was immediately available.

Toms River Police Detectives Louis Santora and Roger Hull are investigating along with the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department.

Anyone with information can contact police headquarters at 732-349-0150 ext 1276.

Tom: It says on top "State of NJ Firearms Purchaser Identification Card". It was issued 02/06/2004, and I live in Toms River. What do I need to do next, or just follow your instructions above?

I said this before and I will say it again: A task force needs to be established because it is only going to get worse before it gets better. Summer employment is over. Soon it will be time to put the heat on and the holidays are right around the corner. If it is this out of control already it WILL NOT get better until an impact is made.

I totally agree with Martin- but the change starts from the top, remember in November. I also agree with CHANGE_TR, Brian Holt, TR Resident, Mike, i dont get it??, susankearney and a few others. Start calling up the Chief's office, start going to twp. council meetings. Hold these people accountable for their in-actions!

if your address has not changed, just go to the police department and ask for application for a pistol permit. If you need any other help visit the nj2as Facebook page. A lot of good info and people are always willing to help

It all sounds suspicious to me. Who checks their mailbox at midnight? The neighbor just walked into their house. Very strange.

Keep your valuables in a tampon box. Thieves will never touch it.

You will get nothing but left handed answers, believe me i have been there. And if you work they will hold the meetings in the middle of the day so you cant attend. Thats the political way of doing things.
stacey September 21, 2012 at 11:59 PM
It is not strange. This person is my neighbor. He works nights. Thank God for him because he found them zipped tied on the floor after hearing them yelling for help. If it wasn't for him they would have been there for God knows how long. Not everyone works 9-5.

To all the people out there start talking to your family about intruders coming in your house and have a plan for it . I can't believe I'm even saying this but you have to be prepared for it cause you never know you could be next . There are so many crack heads right here in ocean county they will rob you for a single bag of crack , rob the contents of you car video games anything . talk to all your neighbors and watch out for each other . My whole house is wired up cameras alarms and people in here who will protect each other no matter what . Me my daughters and wife are trained in fire arms and we will defend our home and each other . I refuse to be invaded in my own home without being prepared . Police are always gonna be called after the fact train with your family and you all will be better off god forbid some dirtbag bothers your family . Be smart and get proper training in fire arms and I guarantee it will make your family safer
So Much to Say September 22, 2012 at 03:01 AM
It's 11pm and I just checked mine....What's so suspicious about that? I was out all day. Think before you post!
TomK September 22, 2012 at 03:45 AM
When I was visiting my dad in the hospital every day for 8 straight days, I would often get home well past midnight, checking my mailbox when I did. It may be unusual in one's everyday life, but it is not something unheard of. I agree that we shouldn't be criticizing the mail-getting neighbor. If anything, we should be thankful he was checking his mail at that hour *AND* that he didn't just turn his cheek and shrug it off as nothing. This is very scary, but it also seems to be a planned out attack with targeted victims. Who knows how they knew there was so much money in that house. The types of crime I usually read about on this site are the types of crimes that are going on everywhere - Toms River simply isn't immune to it. You just have to do what you think you have to do to stay safe - get dogs, install alarms, get a gun - that is up to the individual. I still feel safe in this town and my neighborhood - though I am on the lookout for myself and my neighbors...being a certified night owl, I am typically awake when most people are asleep!
ray September 22, 2012 at 10:14 AM
I have alarms, dogs, and guns. And I don't sleep most nights. Furthermore I will not allow a criminal with a weapon to tie me up. The gun says he's ready to kill me, so the only recourse I can see is to do it first.
barbara September 22, 2012 at 01:22 PM
Can't find a post that i am looking for. Someone posted about a training course you can take. I haven't had my gun out in many years, but that is going to change now and I need a refresher course. Any where in the Toms River/ocean County area that i can get refresher lessons? Thanks.

Alsaao for advanced training, especially for training in your house go and see Anthony from Gun for hire. They have four locations. Mention the NJ2AS and you will get a discount
Rem September 22, 2012 at 10:59 PM
I have checked my security system at the house and Smith And Wessen says everything is good to go. Actually it can handle up to six intruders at one time. Only a one time purchase no monthly fees. His buddy 00buck is riding shotgun. Enter at own risk.
Robert Prol September 23, 2012 at 01:41 PM
Police are a passive form of defense in a home invasion. They can only write reports and investigate afterward. Get a gun, learn to use it.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6!!!
Tim Tippett September 23, 2012 at 04:00 PM
I agree!! and I also believe that if it was not for the Second Amendment we would have NO RIGHTS!! Some of my favorite's and I also believe in are: the Second Amendment IS my carry permit and it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
Tim Tippett September 23, 2012 at 04:07 PM
A-MEN!!
Tim Tippett September 23, 2012 at 04:16 PM
Get a home security sign and put it in your yard it's a good deterant you don't really need the system the sign in most cases move the perp to the next house. and yes I also have a system it's call Ruger. for the back of the house and S&W. for the front. " Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6".
