A Toms River couple was tied up by three men in ski masks armed with handguns who ransacked their Rivercrest Manor home before midnight, police said.
Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said a neighbor freed the husband and wife, victims of a home invasion robbery, after the neighbor became suspicious.
Mastronardy said three men, wearing ski masks and showing handguns, entered the rear of the home, rushed to the bedroom and awoke a 66-year-old husband and 56-year-old wife who were sleeping.
The couple was tied up for about 30 minutes, said the police chief, as the three armed men raided the home off Mapletree Road.
The men fled in two vehicles, a witness reported to police. The witness, Mastronardy said, was checking his mail from his mailbox at the end of his driveway and noticed suspicious activity and called police.
The neighbor then entered the home and found the two victims tied up, and freed them. Mastronardy said no injuries were reported and the couple refused medical attention.
The police chief said a large amount of cash and jewelry was stolen.
No description of the three men or the two vehicles was immediately available.
Toms River Police Detectives Louis Santora and Roger Hull are investigating along with the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department.

Who's got a 100 grand laying around now a days
This is very scary, but it also seems to be a planned out attack with targeted victims. Who knows how they knew there was so much money in that house. The types of crime I usually read about on this site are the types of crimes that are going on everywhere - Toms River simply isn't immune to it. You just have to do what you think you have to do to stay safe - get dogs, install alarms, get a gun - that is up to the individual. I still feel safe in this town and my neighborhood - though I am on the lookout for myself and my neighbors...being a certified night owl, I am typically awake when most people are asleep!
Some of my favorite's and I also believe in are: the Second Amendment IS my carry permit and it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
