Fire Referendum Polls Open 2 to 9 p.m. Today

District 1 registered voters can vote at Toms River Fire Co. 2's Firehouse on 45 West Water Street

A $ is before voters today of Toms River Fire District 1. The special fire referendum question asks voters if the Fire District should appropriate $1.022 million to buy land at Hooper and Hadley Avenues, to build a new firehouse that the would share. The $1.022 million is the possible cost to buy the land.

A second question asks voters to appropriate $48,750 for District 1's share of an emergency generator for the Toms River Fire Academy. Toms River Fire Commissioner Mark Autenrieth said the generator will back-up dispatch functions that were among the offline networks after Hurricane Irene left the Oak Avenue dispatch powerless.

Registered voters of Fire District 1 can head to the polling location, which is Toms River Fire Co. No. 2 firehouse at 45 West Water Street, Toms River, 08753.

Polls open at 2 p.m. and close at 9 p.m.

Fire district 1 includes the Toms River election districts of such areas as downtown Toms River, much of East Dover, and the barrier island.

The actual voting districts are:

1,2,3,4,9,10, 13, 14, 18, 19, 27, 34, 36, 37, 40, 54, 60, 8, 26, 7, 11, 12, 16, 17, 28, 31, 32, 33, 38, 39, 41, 42, 53, 57.

District 1 Administrator Brian Kubiel said that includes such areas of Toms River as the Bayshore, downtown Toms River, East Dover, the barrier island, Money Island, Georgetown and Brookside, Winteringham Village, portions of West Dover and all areas south of Route 37.

All voting districts in Toms River that are south of Route 37 are included in District 1.

Portions on the other side of Route 37 are part of District 1, too. That includes the area south of Dover Walk on Route 166 to Route 37, the south side of Maple Tree Road to Route 37, and the corner of Fischer and Hooper to Route 37.

The Fischer Boulevard corridor, except for the Water’s Edge neighborhood, is part of District 1.

On Hooper Avenue, the east side of the highway at the Indian Hill intersection to Route 37 is also District 1.

In West Dover, south portions of the Oak Ridge Parkway and Lakehurst Road are in District 1. The West Dover district stretches to the Manchester border.

Parking for the polling location is available in the lots along Irons Street.
