Five Toms River Residents Indicted in String of Burglaries

Grand jury hands up 24-count indictment against group

Five Toms River men have been indicted in connection with a string of burglaries in town that were committed between Dec. 8 and Jan. 31.

Parker B. Egan, Michael Lanza, Joseph Sabato, Bobby L. Smith and Jesse L. Smith all were indicted in connection with nine burglaries in the Kettle Creek and Green Island sections of Toms River.

The burglaries netted more than $4,000 worth of cash, jewelry, electronics, two pellet guns and prescription medication from the homes.

Jesse L. Smith, 20, faces 19 counts -- 10 of third-degree burglary, eight of third-degree theft and one count of resisting arrest. He is being held in the Ocean County Jail, Toms River, on $75,000 bail, no 10 percent option.

Egan, Lanza, Sabato each were indicted on single charges of receiving stolen property, while Bobby Smith was indicted on two charges of receiving stolen property.

Egan posted $1,500 bail on Feb. 4, according to court officials. Bobby Smith, Sabato and Lanza all were released on summons.

Jesse Smith is accused of taking the items, then turning the jewelry over to the other four men charged in the idictment. The resisting arrest indictment relates to a burglary on Jan. 26, where he fled police.

Smith allegedly burglarized 3 houses in our neighborhood, and there have been no burglaries since the TR police caught him in the last house. Now our Neighborhood Watch reports strange cars parked on the street, young men ringing doorbells and suspicious activity of any kind -- especially in daytime when most burglaries are committed by 20-something men looking for stuff to sell so they can buy drugs. Start a Neighborhood Watch in your area. It works.

will keep my eye open since i live in the area. i knew jesse when he was a kid, im not a fortune teller but i was seriously concerned about this young man who would show up at my door in the morning for breakfast and proceed to stay for lunch too. i knew his home life was not good at all. i tried to help him out but knew his home life would play a huge factor in his future. so sad and such a shame.

Come do your "shopping" at my house lads - I have a triple "D" Cell maglight that's just waiting to say hello to the side of your head! And by the way if I miss your visit, please make sure you smile nicely for the camera's. Great Work by TRPD & the neighborhood watch folks ! People need to get into the "If you see something, Say something" mode as it applies to more than a suspicious package being left somewere. Also, I'm just a wee bit curious: Did any of these boys have a known "habit" or past criminal records ? If so, why were they out on the street in the first place?

Patch, let us know when the case comes to court, when they're sentenced, and when they get out. Our Neighborhood Watch will be watching. Then the process probably will be repeated for the Smith Gang.
