"Officers Larry DiFabio and Brian Dugan were in their marked patrol unit at Sun Valley Road and Oakridge Parkway at 11:15 a.m. Friday. They heard a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Oakridge Parkway. The driver, Frank Laspina, 62, of Cape Coral, Florida, was driving his mother's 2003 Buick when he reported the car accelerated rapidly and his brakes did not work causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

"The car left the roadway and drove through some trees at 159 Sun Valley Road, then traveled behind the stopped patrol vehicle, drove up the driveway at 159 Sun Valley and through the garage, striking a 1967 Cadillac parked inside the garage."

The Toms River Fire Company responded to the accident which caused a gas leak, police said. Laspina was airlifted from Winding River Park to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune Township. Officer Terry Warren is investigating the accident.
