Former Toms River Regional Teacher Admits Sexual Relationship With Boy, 15

Erin T. Haskell, 31, pleaded guilty to a four-month-long relationship with a 15-year-old student

A former Toms River Regional schoolteacher admitted in an Ocean County courtroom on Tuesday that she had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy.

Erin T. Haskell, 31, of Barnegat, pleaded guilty to a charge of second degree sexual assault before Superior Court Judge Francis Hodgson.

Dressed neatly in a gray skirt and jacket, Haskell timidly responded “yes” to several questions asked by Hodgson as well as her attorney, Bradley Billhimer during the five minute-long proceeding.

Haskell admitted to having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old minor, identified only by his initials, between June 2012 and Sept. 2012. The sexual activities occurred in both Beachwood, where she taught and Barnegat, her home town.

Prosecutors said at the hearing that they would seek a seven year-long prison term for Haskell. Billhimer said he would ask for three.

As part of the plea agreement, Hodgson said, Haskell will have to register as a sex offender under Meghan’s Law for life, and she will remain under lifetime parole supervision. She will also relinquish her teaching license at sentencing, the date for which will not be set until after Haskell undergoes a psychiatric evaluation at the state Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel.

Haskell, who taught at Intermediate School South in Beachwood, was charged in Nov. 2012 with having an inappropriate relationship with one of her students, then-prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford said at the time.

She was originally charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and exhibiting obscene material to a minor.

State pension records showed Haskell having worked as a Spanish teacher with a masters degree and eight years experience at the time her employment was suspended by the Toms River Regional school district. Her salary at the time was $54,800.

Neither Haskell nor her attorney were available for comment following Tuesday’s proceedings.

Wow... I am shocked since on the previous posts, it seems like a awful lot of people were defending her and denying that the allocations were true.

They always do that in the beginning.First you get the 'hang 'em in the galleys immediately' mentality, followed shortly thereafter by the 'I caught him walking out the door with the TV' but he's innocent until proven guilty crowd.

Ortley....am I missing something? This did not happen in Toms River..Its Beachwood. Even though Toms River is still a crap hole lately

It really amazes me how some people like Wahoo can just take a broad brush and demonize a subset of people. I don't care if it's teachers, about the Tom's river people, or its resources, if you use that brush consistently you aren't helping your cause. Yes, what Haskell did was atrocious, however, for every Haskell there are an exponential number of educators who do their jobs. There are an exponential number of people in this world who try hard to give their best.

I'm having a problem accepting that prison is the solution for punishing this teacher if this charge is substantiated (at least from the information I'm aware of so far.) I understand if this happened that the teacher broke the trust we place in those that educate our children and I agreed that deterrents to such behavior are necessary. But prison? Who got hurt here? They are both kids regardless of their roles or positions. It would seem to me that being fired as a teacher and having her teaching certificate suspended for a few years if she is guilty would give her time to grow up more and become more of a responsible citizen than a prison record for consensual sex would serve. Let's face it. If it happened, the only things the 15-year-old is going to experience are a bunch of high-fives and a lot more female popularity. And it will more than likely be several years, if ever, before this young man realizes just how traumatized we expected him to be from this situation.

And TRRS still doesn't have any policy regarding teacher contact with students. Currently, teachers will facebook, twitter, text, etc students because there is NO contact policy regarding it.

So many scandals; so little time.
Jin August 07, 2013 at 08:58 PM
He was 15 yeras old. He is a minor. She was twice his age. We entrust our children to the teachers. Their job is to teach and to keep these children safe. It doesn't matter if the minor is a boy or girl nor for that matter, if the teacher is male or female. Sometimes these acts of abuse will surface in their adult life. It could take as many as 20 years before it could have a detrimental effect on them. Most definitely, this teacher deserves jail time.

Teach is the operative word.
Jin August 08, 2013 at 04:04 PM
Maruca ..."They were tramps to begin with"??? I assume the girls were minors. Tramps? So are you saying that a minor if they are a girl they are a tramp (given that situation). A boy is just a boy in such a situation??? Is that what you are inferring? If you are, you are one dumb S.O. B.

@Failed in the ward, Mac made a mistake and apologized. What's your excuse?
Jin August 09, 2013 at 02:49 PM
Maruca, I frankly don't give a damn about how good a teacher is (in this regard). If he or she succumbs to their sexual desires with a minor, they are the responsible one. 15,17,18 year olds under the teachers care are children. It is nor only against the law for them to gratify themselves with these children, it is morally reprehensible. You can say all you want about the girls wanting it and being tramps. Get real. I am sure we all have friends or relatives that have been considered tramps and now are upstanding members of our communities. When they were that age, they frankly didn't know their arse from their elbows, BUT their hormones were active. They did not need a trusted servant of our community to take full advantage of them. Think about this. If you have children, maybe you can understand this a little more. Think back to when you were that age, did you ever do anything that your parents would have had a fit about? I am not talking about situations like this. Anything? In this day and age , sexual encounters at that age are like when I was younger stealing an apple or some such thing from a grocery store. They don't realize what they are doing nor do they care. BUT when an older (adult) takes advantage of them, they will suffer for it later on in life. Even though it is consentual, IT IS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF A MINOR. I guess I could try to drum this into you until I am blue in the face, Apparently, you just don't get it.
