Gas Main Break Shuts Bey Lea Road

Gas company, fire department respond as road is blocked for half hour

Bey Lea Road is reopening to traffic after a gas main break shuttered a portion of the thoroughfare for a half-hour this afternoon.

Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said the busy road was closed from Old Freehold Road to Intermediate North Way as the Pleasant Plains Fire Company and New Jersey Natural Gas crews worked to repair the breach.

"The lane closures were due to a gas main break with ongoing construction in that area," Mastronardy said.

Construction to restripe the road and insulate portions of the sidewalks on Bey Lea Road was responsible for the temporary breach. There were no injuries or evacuations, Mastronardy said.

However, traffic was snarled as schools let out for the day, and motorists were being diverted right or left onto Old Freehold Road.
