Passengers free from vehicle without extrication, driven to Jersey Shore Medical

Route 9 near Cox Cro Road was closed in both directions for two hours as police and fire crews investigated a head-on collision just before 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, officials said.

Toms River Police are investigating the incident, where a 2010 Dodge was southbound with a male occupant on Route 9 when it collided head-on with a 1996 Honda operated by a 48-year-old woman northbound on Route 9, said Police Chief Michael Mastronardy in an email.

Both the drivers were transported by Toms River Police EMS to Jersey Shore Medical Center. Police closed Route 9 in both directions in the Pleasant Plains section of town for about two hours during the accident investigation, near Riverwood Drive. Lanes were clear as of 7 a.m.
