Heavy Copper Wire Stolen From Softball Complex, Police Say
The theft from the new complex on North Bay Avenue, which is under construction, occurred over the weekend
Copper wire worth $2,000 was stolen over the weekend from the site of the new Toms River softball complex , police said.
It is yet another in a series of copper thefts from around the area in the last several months, thefts that have included a break-in at a substation in September, police said.
Michael Mastronardy said a thief or thieves took 20 pieces of the wire -- No. 2 WAD copper grounding wire -- from Little Silver Electric, one of the contractors at the new complex. No. 2 copper wire is about the thickness of a pencil, so it is very valuable, according to electricians. The stolen pieces were each 20 feet long, said the police chief.

Mastronardy said recyclers should be aware that the wire was stolen. Officer Frank Moscella is investigating. Anyone with information on this theft or others should contact Moscella at 732-349-0150.
