Heavy Volume Continues on Route 37

Forty-five-minute delays were reported for traffic heading toward and away from Seaside Heights

Heavy volume continues to clog west and eastbound lanes of Route 37, as travelers head from the Garden State Parkway entrance toward the Mathis bridge.

Forty-five-minute bridge traffic delays were reported on both sides of the highway as of 4 p.m. The heaviest volume is ongoing at Route 166, Hooper Avenue and Route 35 intersections on Route 37 eastbound.

However an accident on Route 37 in the Berkeley Township section of Pelican Island is also slowing traffic. Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said an accident with multiple injuries is underway.

According to NJDOT, Route 37 is down to one lane near Route 35 at 2:20 p.m Further details were not immediately available.

Mastronardy said on the barrier island, travelers should be alert for crossing guards and pedestrians crossing both north and south Route 35.

As in previous years, crossing guards are stationed at key intersections to stop traffic and allow pedestrians and bicyclists to cross Route 35.

In addition to the real-time traffic map, above, traffic cameras of Route 37 can also provide a live view of road conditions: There are several cameras up and down Route 37 from Lakehurst to Toms River, which you can find here.

BENNY's go home.
Scott July 06, 2012 at 08:26 PM
Funny how Ocean City, NJ doesn't have as many incidents/accidents as Seaside Hts has. Wonder why that is?
Casey July 06, 2012 at 08:29 PM
does anyone know if the bridge is closed or just down to one lane?
Lisa Puglisi July 06, 2012 at 09:44 PM
Those Bennies bring alot of revenue to the shore areas. Although few are belligerent, most are respectful and have been vacationing here for years. Lighten up.
So Much to Say July 06, 2012 at 10:15 PM
BENNIE's are nothing but trouble. For the money they bring to a few business it isn't worth the trouble. Ask the residents and police of all the shore communities, they hate their arrival. Ask the business owners, they love them.

It was one lane earlier, around 4pm

Ask the business owners. They love the business.

I agree with you Lisa....for years we were "Bennies" only difference is we respected others and their property..... and taught our children to also. But as you said....it's the few that make it bad for the many !
Karen Ann Campbell July 06, 2012 at 11:09 PM
Ortley I agree. The term Benny is so negative And should only be reserved For those who deserve it. These people boost The economy. Some are very nice And respect The fact that people live here. Unfortunately too many act like those asshats from jersey SHORE.

@Lisa Puglisi When most people reffer to the "bennies" i dont think they are refering to the familys here during the day... for the most part... Its the After Dark bennies most locals are refering to, and most of them are wreckless and could careless. theyre in seaside, whos night life is catered to them i.e " the jersey shore" who all but 3 of them actually grew up in jersey. Winter time is for the locals in seaside, Minus the section 8, and emergency servies, In all aspects police and ems espically is like a night and day difference. Anyone with some time or interest give a listen to this http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?action=wp&feedId=1103 and hear all the stuff that goes on at night. You wont believe your ears.

Morons, not seaside and nothing to do with bennies.
Lisa Puglisi July 07, 2012 at 03:11 PM
Thanks Ed. I agree. I didn't realize all the negativity "down the shore".

Has NOTHING to do with Bennies or locals, it was AN accident , happens all the time and traffic is a mess for hours, you only HAVE a few roads in and out ! Wait until the sirens are for real at Oyster Creek and we have to get OUT, then you will see a traffic jamb like you have NEVER seen before , NO one will move for, hours or DAYS !!!!!!

You guys have some nerve to automaticlly assume it was a damn benny who caused the whole accident. ANYONE can cause them. It is a ACCIDENT! Get it right. Bennys and locals can cause them. And this type of accident a tractor trailer truck hit a nissan sedan. And want to know how i know it was not a benny, because I was IN the accident. So get your heads out of your asses, and stop assuming they are bennies. They did absolutely nothing but come down to seaside for a vacation just like all of you go to Florida for yours. So stop being so ignorant and blaming every horrible thing that happens here on them.

Did those poor people survive the accident? It really looked like a bad one.

Damn Bennys. Number 1 reason I hate summer. They take everything I love to do and turn it into hell. We have these damn ppl out east on Long Island too. Yesterday they clogged up what usually was a peaceful train ride putting their luggage all over the seats so ppl couldn't sit down!! Then they trashed the outlets out there too. WE DID FINE BEFORE ALL YOU CITY PPL CAME AND TOOK OVER THE SUMMER. And we will do fine again. Go home!!! Dont they have beaches and stores in the city??
John Pine July 08, 2012 at 01:14 AM
Well when you have a bunch of people who come from in and around the city come here, clog up the roads, throw trash everywhere, and act like they are the reason you exist driving around their Mercedes and Range Rovers you can understand why I'm bothered. We did fine before they were here. There was less traffic, it was cleaner, and there was less crime. What Seaside and Toms River are going through is very similar to what Riverhead and the East End of Long Island is going through. These people back up the L.I.E. and make what use to be a relaxing place for us locals a zoo. We're sick of it!
Project Bluebeam July 08, 2012 at 05:23 PM
The Tunney Bridge was designed for TWO lanes, not THREE. When you combine drivers who are scared to death doing 15mph with BENNY lowlifes in their pimped-out rice burners you get trouble.

such haters here. wow :(
Miangel0187 August 17, 2012 at 07:42 PM
Mosst of the time tourists can be positive, but as of recent years they are rude, and obnoxious and if you are called a BENNY it is an insult and it means you did something wrong. The fact that you think you keep us all afloat etc is ridiculous. You are here two-three months out of the year the rest of the year we all live here and keep ourselves in business. So contrary to your inflated egos we are just fine with out the traffic, the inuslts, and the being talked down to. Respect the people and you wont get called a Benny.

Revenue? Like condom wrappers and 40's? You're one of them Lisa. You're just as ignorant and that's why you can't see the difference. BTW, Good going with private school for your daughter. She cant even get a job at the mall. Way to go mothering...
Katie young November 03, 2012 at 10:53 PM
Hi Lisa--Did anyone ever tell you that you look like Slash from G N R? Amazing! :-)
Katie young November 03, 2012 at 10:54 PM
Great job raising your daughter Lisa. She cant even get a job at the mall! What a loser! LOL! Great mothering! She'll be just as high class as the Bennies you adore. WT! Donovan was worth it eh? LOLOLOser!
