Homeowner Hospitalized After Holiday City Silverton House Fire

Candles being blamed for fire's origin

A Holiday City at Silverton resident awoke to a heavy smoke condition in a house fire that occurred Sunday night.

The fire, reported at 10:20 p.m., occurred at the home located at 2 Caribbean Court in the adult community, said James Mercready, Director of the Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention.

Firefighters from the Silverton Fire Company quick extinguished the fire, which inspectors later determined to have been caused by unattended candles igniting combustible items, said Mercready.

The resident of the home was taken to Community Medical Center by Toms River EMS for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Inspector Dominick Roselli conducted the investigation, Mercready said. Chief Gary Tattersall led the Silverton firefighters.

THe fire prevention bureau was reminding residents on Monday to never leave burning candles unattended, and ensure they are completely blown out before leaving the area where they had been lit.
