Hooper near Dayton Closed From One-Car Accident

Hooper Avenue between Dayton and Grand avenues remains closed as Toms River police and firefighters respond to a serious one-car accident there, police said at midnight.

Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said the one-car accident was near Orchard Street and Hooper Avenue, where a driver struck a utility pole around 11 p.m.

"The vehicle was northbound on Hooper Avenue when it left the roadway and struck a utility pole," said Mastronardy in an email. The name of the driver or if there were additional occupants was not immediately released by police, who are in the midst of an investigation in the accident.

The  Toms River Fire Companies No. 1 & 2 responded to the accident.

"This will require the closure of Hooper Avenue between Dayton and Grand for a couple of hours," Mastronardy said.

The roadway is a single lane in each direction at that point in Hooper, near Orchard Street.

Investigating are Traffic Safety Officers Eugene Bachonski and Robert Westfall.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area. Main Street and Hadley remain open to vehicular traffic during the investigation.
