Lock Your Cars, Police Warn

Toms River police are reminding residents to lock their cars after a rash of reports of thefts from unlocked vehicles that began Thursday night and continued Friday night.

More than a dozen unlocked vehicles were entered in the Green Island section of the township Thursday night, Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said. Two wallets were taken from vehicles but in most of the incidents nothing was stolen but items were moved around.

The reports on Friday morning came in from Sunrise, Crane, Channel and Green Island roads, he said.

On Friday night into Saturday morning, numerous vehicles in the East Dover section were hit.

A Raleigh Drive resident awakened by barking dogs told police of seeing two white males, both about 16 years old, going through a neighbor’s cars. One male wore a white  sweatshirt and the second, described as “chunky,” had on a gray sweatshirt. One of the boys was carrying a backpack that appeared to be full of items.

The pair was last seen running toward Vaughan Avenue, Mastronardy said. Reports of unlocked cars being entered came from Knight Street, Princess Court and Raleigh Avenue, with few items of value taken, he said.
