Man Runs from Police After Mistakenly Thinking He Has Outstanding Warrants

If only he knew he had no outstanding warrants, things might have worked out differently for a Toms River man.

Instead, the man fled police who were responding to a suspicious persons report. Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said the man bolted because "he thought he had oustanding warrants," but he had none.

The incident unfolded 5:30 p.m. Monday along Adams Avenue and Foster Road. Toms River Police Officer Michael Foy was investigating a report of two suspicious people, said the police chief.

The two men were found and questioned. Then, while Foy was checking the suspects, one of the men ran from the officer, jumping over a fence and into a backyard on Mystic Port Place, said the police chief.

He was found and the man was later identified as Nathaniel McMartin of Toms River. Officer Foy charged McMartin with obstruction and hindering apprehension.

Shortly thereafter, police determined there were no active warrants like McMartin suspected. Mastronardy said the man was then lodged on $1,000 bail in the Ocean County Jail.
