Man Shot at Birthday Party In Toms River

Man wounded at 21-year-old's party on Gilford Avenue

A 21-year-old's birthday party ended in gunfire Friday night at a home in Gilford Avenue, police said.

Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said a shooting at a Gilford Avenue home left one young male wounded. He was transported to Jersey Shore Trauma Center by helicopter after 11:30 p.m.

On Saturday morning, police remained at the home as the investigation continued. Gilford Avenue was closed to traffic at Adams Avenue while the investigation continued.

The Gilford Avenue neighbors flooded police headquarters with calls after hearing gunshots fired, Mastronardy said.

"Toms River police received several calls reference the shooting from neighbors," said Mastronardy in an email.

The shots came from a home where a crowd of people were partying, celebrating a 21-year-old's birthday, Mastronardy said.

"Numerous people were attending a 21-year old's birthday party when the shooting erupted," the police chief said. "The victim ran to a neighbor's home looking for help."

The victim's name has not been released. No information is available on possible arrests in this developing investigation.

The Ocean County Prosecutors Office and Toms River Police are investigating.
