Mobile Home Destroyed by Fire in Toms River

Fire began in refrigerator components, officials rule

A mobile home in the Roberts Mobile Home Park, in the Pleasant Plains section of Toms River, was destroyed in a early evening fire, officials said.

The fire at 101 Roberts Road was reported at 6:55 p.m., according to Jim Mercready, Director of the Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention.

The Pleasant Plains, Silverton and Toms River Fire Company No. 2 responded, with firefighters conducting fire suppression operations under the direction of Pleasant Plains Fire Company Chief David George, Mercready said.

The unit was vacant at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

The fire was caused by a failure of energized electrical components in the mobile home's refrigerator, Mercready said.

The fire cause and origin investigation was conducted by Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention Inspector Kieran Flynn.

Due to the extent of damage, the unit was posted as an unsafe structure by Flynn.  It was also determined that the unit had operable smoke alarms which activated at the time of the fire.

"Installing, testing and maintaining operable smoke and carbon monoxide alarms is an essential part of fire safety in any residential setting," said Mercready.
