Mortar Round Found Near Shelter Cove Park

A man using a metal detector in an area just north of Shelter Cove Park found an old mortar round on Saturday, police said.

The 28-year-old township man called police when he made the find in shallow water, said Police Chief Michael Mastronardy.

Officer James Skripko notified the New Jersey State Police Bomb Unit and Marine Unit, which responded and removed the round which was "inert," Mastronardy said.
