No Fire, But Blowtorch Damage Closes Street In Toms River

It wasn't a fire, but it was a blowtorch that led to the evacuation of a Main Street building and the street's temporary closing Wednesday.

Toms River firefighters responded at 2 p.m. on Wednesday to a possible fire in an office building at 200 Main Street, police said. The building was evacuated as fire personal checked the building after occupants reported  a smoke condition.

Roofers were using blowtorches making repairs at the time of the incident, police said.  While no fire was located, firefighters did discover wood beams in the ceiling had been smoldering.

Roofers were using blow torches to make repairs on the roof, police said.

Main street was closed and traffic detoured for about an hour between Washington and Legion while fire operations were being conducted, police said.
