No Motive Yet In Connecticut School Shooting

Newtown police say all victims' families have been notified and that officials are not yet releasing the names of the gunman or children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Newtown, Conn., residents reeling from the massacre of 26 people, including 20 children, at an elementary school on Friday are searching for answers about the gunman’s motive.

Police have said that they are “working backwards” to piece together the “why” behind the mass shooting in this town of about 27,000 about 60 miles northeast of New York City. A noon Saturday prayer service is scheduled for St. John's Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook, a section of Newtown.

Newtown Police Lt. George Sinko, the department’s public information officer, told Patch Saturday morning that investigators have no sense of what prompted the gunman to act.

“There is no sense of motive at this time,” Sinko said.

Though Connecticut State Police have declined to identify the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter, he is being widely identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza. According to NBC News, three weapons used in the shootings—two 9 mm handguns and a rifle—were legally purchased and registered to Lanza’s mother, a teacher at the school whom police say was found dead at her Sandy Hook home.

Parents of schoolchildren at the scene Friday told Patch that the school was locked and that all visitors needed to be buzzed in. Sinko said Saturday that the gunman appeared to have blasted his way inside.

Police radio dispatches aired by CNN reveal harrowing early communications to emergency responders who arrived at the elementary school around 9:40 a.m. Friday.

"Caller is indicating she thinks that someone is shooting in the building," a dispatcher says. "The front glass has been broken."

And later: "All units, the individual that I have on the phone is continuing to hear what he believes to be gunfire. Units are responding to Sandy Hook school as this time. The shooting appears to have stopped. The school is in lockdown."

According to Sinko, the gunman may have shot out glass next to the front door of the school.

“We say that because the window next to the door was shattered. We are still investigating," Sinko said.

Sinko said investigators are sorting through a “tremendous amount of evidence."

Much of the investigators’ work involves checking motor vehicles, Sinko said.

Joe, You sound like the type of kid who should never own a gun. Are you one of Obama's sheeple? Barneylicous
Marlboro VoiceofReason December 17, 2012 at 01:08 PM
How's about banning all the XBOX games of War and killing in the U.S. - keep them in Japan and let them kill people over there. All American youths are getting decensitized to violence and neglecting their schoolwork and family values.
Mark December 17, 2012 at 01:10 PM
Joe, Its people that kill...not guns...That's like saying a pencil caused a kid to fail the test. This is let's make excuses for everyone and everything. Laws are not going to stop from people doing things. Such as drugs underage drink. The real problem is not having adequate help for mental illness. Mental illness is a sickness that can happen to someone anytime. You can be normal, have a chemical in balance that can set someone off.
debra December 17, 2012 at 01:17 PM
really marlboro guy are you blaming video games???im 43 years old have been playing video games since i was 5 im still playing Call of Duty.. i never once thought of going out and killing people, many of my friends children play these games and are quite gifted, how about taking a look at these families and seeing how many have a father figure or even a family that does things together,i think we need to take a closer look at this mother and ok she liked guns(strange hobby for a woman) did she really need them for protection? she lived in one of the safets places in america. everyone is saying he never showed any kind of violent behavior, how do we know? maybe some stuff went on behind closed doors we will never know about, the father wasnt in the picture, why was that? maybe because he did show violence towards his new family perhaps. before we go blaming guns and video games lets get the whole true story first.
Barney December 17, 2012 at 01:29 PM
Marlboro Guy, I am seeing a pattern here. Why is it all of the gun control bullies have horrible grammar and might be illiterate? Frank Rizzo, Tim and now Debra. Oh ya, they are lazy liberals looking to soak up your hard earned money. Barneylicous

Pencils cannot kill people....that's a rediculous analogy. You gun advocates will never get it. Help for the mentally ill, people kill not guns.....yada yada.........first, mentally ill people easily seem to get themselves guns.....so, the first logical step is to KEEP GUNS FROM THEM by keeping them out of society. Yes, people are evil but evil people get guns.....so the first step is to KEEP GUNS FROM THEM...........see how this logic goes?? It's not difficult to understand the connection between the ease of getting guns with the crazies atari first choice always seem to be a firearm!! Stop your agenda for once and think of society!!!

Guns are a device used created to kill lol. A pencil isn't, a car isn't. They were created to do something very simple: kill. Even a knife while a weapon, was not originally designed as a means to kill but a tool. Whether it be a deer, a human, or an intruder in your home. So, yeah the only thing guns should compare to in analogies are other weapons whose soul purpose was to kill, missiles, nukes, etc… Not pencils.
mgh December 17, 2012 at 01:50 PM
It doesn't matter WHAT you use the gun for (defending, fighting, hunting) there are a) certain types of guns that a normal citizen should not have and b) anything can be turned into a weapon, but something that is BUILT to be a weapon, should have some very strict guidelines and rules on who can or can carry/use.
Laura December 17, 2012 at 01:55 PM
Well, I guess we don't need speed limits either as no one pays attention to them.
debra December 17, 2012 at 02:03 PM
Barney, for your information i hate guns, and calling people illiterate is kind of being a bully.we are on a computer for crying out loud not writing an essay, grow up.. I lived in Arizona for years in the desert,we had guns lots of them never liked them never shot one. but really did those guns go to this young man and say hey you should use me to kill all those children.. no his mind did it. having access to shose guns made it easier for him to act it out. And if i heard the news correctly he went to purchase his own gun but was denied.Do I think assault weapons should be banned yes.. no need for the common citizen to have one.
Laura December 17, 2012 at 02:04 PM
Probably a lot of idiots who aren't afraid to post using their own name. I don't believe in banning guns but I don't believe there is any reason for a private citizen to have an assault weapon. They are not used for deer hunting. It may not stop all indviduals from obtaining those weapons and using them on others but it's a start.
bayboat December 17, 2012 at 02:07 PM
Guns are designed to shoot a bullet out of one end. 99.9 % of the time its used for target shooting or hunting.
Laura December 17, 2012 at 02:08 PM
It might just stop one and that makes it one tragedy averted.
bayboat December 17, 2012 at 02:10 PM
If we're evolving backwards like you believe, and are losing our ability to be rational...I WANT A GUN to defend myself against all these backwards, illogical people!
bayboat December 17, 2012 at 02:12 PM
One thing the mother didnt do as she was supposed to do was LOCK UP her guns. Every gun thats not an automatic is a semi. What you want to do then is ban EVERY gun then. No.
bayboat December 17, 2012 at 02:14 PM
LOCKED UP guns around are no problem.
Laura December 17, 2012 at 02:18 PM
How do you institutionalize someone who has shown no propensity for violence? So you believe institutionlizing everyone that you deem possibly violent is going to work? Medical Health professionals don't even agree on that one. Millions of people in this country are mentally ill but they don't kill. Let's take away their rights so we don't impede yours.
mgh December 17, 2012 at 02:21 PM
Bayboat, the first guns were created in the 1200s in China and used by the military. Not for hunting. As for the present, target practice? Lol im not going to waste my breath on that statement. But I will repeat what I said, doesn't matter what you use the gun for, it's still a weapon whose purpose was to inflict as much damage and death. Which is why cops are trained to pull out your gun to kill.
Laura December 17, 2012 at 02:23 PM
You don't seem to understand mental illness? Proper values are not going to cure mental illness.
~Barb~ December 17, 2012 at 02:29 PM
How do you propose to get each and every single gun out of the urban crime centers? Then there's the little issue of black market imports of what is sure to be inferior grade ammunition. The problem with Liberals is that they always think they have a one size fits all panacea for everything.
Laura December 17, 2012 at 02:32 PM
Actually, Barney, I see it differently than you do. I notice the gun rights bullies tend to be intractable and afraid that someone is going to come and take their guns away. I do hope those guns make you feel safe. How can we be sure, especially with your rhetoric, that you aren't mentally challenged?
mgh December 17, 2012 at 02:44 PM
Unfortunately, that is also the other issue.. How do you get anything of value off the black market like drugs? We all know how well the war on drugs turned out. Only way is to make the item obsolete and/or ineffective and useless. How do you do that? No f*cking clue lol
Opinionated December 17, 2012 at 06:18 PM
Those who want to ban guns should read this and then we'll see what your next excuse will be. http://www.kgw.com/news/Clackamas-man-armed-confronts-mall-shooter-183593571.html
Tim December 17, 2012 at 07:08 PM
@ opinionated hereAs I was going down to pull, I saw someone in the back of the Charlotte move, and I knew if I fired and missed, I could hit them," he said.s why you dont act like rambo" not to mention how do the cops know who the bad guy is? idiot "
oldsoldier December 18, 2012 at 01:09 AM
To Laura - I'm glad you brought that up. If parents structure their children's lives properly and instill proper values, instead of leaving them to figure things out for themselves or be their friends, perhaps it may not cure mental illness, but it might just prevent someone from developing one of the many mental illnesses out there and enable them to cope better. To be taught "this is why you do the right thing" instead of "there is a reason why you do not do the right thing", could help at least someone. And if it does help one person to help themselves, isn't that worth it?
Mark December 18, 2012 at 01:12 AM
Go back and read my comments... I said I feel Mental illness is the real problem that would cause a person to kill anyone, never mind innocent little kids. Mental illness could affect anyone. It is not all poor people like some seem to think, it affects rich people as well. You missed my point with the pencil or car, never said it is designed to kill anyone. I am just sick of all the excuses of pinning the blame on one thing or another. Each person should be responsible for themselves and their own actions. If a kid fails a test, they will try to blame the pencil if they could as silly as it sounds. I was just making a point, or the teacher which is the one to get the usual blame. It's not that the kid didn't study. If someone gets in to a car drunk, the car has killed plenty being it is a heavy piece of machinery. Is it the car's fault? No, it is the person who chose to get in to the car drunk. As well as drugs, if you are drugged out it can wind up killing someone if someone makes the wrong decision. We just keep on blaming instead of taking responsibility that something has to be done with mental illness. It was stated in the paper that no one really knows if it was mental illness that caused this. Well, I say, get your head out of your butt! Mental Illness is the only thing that would cause someone to shoot little kids and Adults cold blooded. I don't care how many laws you put through, if someone goes off the deep end and they want to get a few guns they will.
NJarhead December 18, 2012 at 03:08 PM
And millions of people own guns legally and don't kill anyone. The argument of gun control is weak. It doesn't work. What's more sickening is your willingness, and that of the likes of you, to protect the rights of one aspect profile, while completely discounting the other, and why? Because you know nothing of guns, because you don't like guns. No one should have their rights debated, or pressured into debate, by the vastly uninformed. Especially in the wake of a tragedy.
NJarhead December 18, 2012 at 03:09 PM
And you don't understand crime. Criminals don't abide by the law. Only law abiding citizens will be affected by your knee-jerk, "feel good" legislation proposal.
