No Smoking Proposed at New Softball Complex

Ordinance on July 24 township council meeting

The newest recreation facility in Toms River could join the other municipal parks and recreation sites as smoke-free.

A proposed ordinance would make the new Veterans Softball Complex on North Bay Avenue a no-smoking zone.

The proposed ordinance will be decided at the next Toms River Township Council meeting, July 24.

A previous ordinance lists all the recreational complexes in town, and prohibits smoking there. But since the softball complex is new, it's not written into the pre-existing ordinance.

Councilman George Wittmann asked why the new facility isn't automatically covered in the existing ordinance.

"It lists all the facilities in the ordinance, so we need to do a new one," Township Administrator Paul Shives said.

Wittmann suggested the existing ordinance be changed to simply say "all recreational facilities," to streamline the process.

The township council will meet July 24 at 6 p.m. in town hall.

The agenda so far for the meeting is published here.

Township council members and Mayor Thomas Kelaher have a comments section to the meeting where the officials might give reports on township activities.

However, if you can't make the meeting, you can view the broadcast live on the township website.
