Parkway Accident Detours Northbound Traffic onto Route 9

Accident northbound just after Toms River toll plaza

Traffic from the Garden State Parkway northbound was detoured onto Route 9 in Toms River as police and fire crews respond to reports of an accident.

All Northbound lanes closed for approximately 45 minutes, detouring traffic onto Route 9 via Exit 83.

The accident was reported around 5 p.m. Monday near mile 85 after the Toms River toll plaza, and at 6:20 p.m., traffic is crawling to a halt both locally and on the parkway.

At 7:15 p.m. debris from the accident remained near mile post 85.7, where one vehicle could be seen in a steep ditch off the right hand side, a second car completely overturned and smashed, with two tow trucks nearby and more than five state police and New Jersey Turnpike Authority vehicles tending to the incident.

At 6:35 p.m., the detour was lifted, state police reported. But right lanes remained closed on the Parkway northbound as traffic is down to two lanes before the toll plaza.

Local traffic crawled to a standstill shortly after police began the detour, with traffic jams between the parkway exit north into Pleasant Plains sections on Route 9, and parkway traffic through the detour is backed up for five miles, police reported. The entrance to Parkway North via Route 37 East is at a standstill.

For more than four miles on Route 9 northbound between Briar Knolls and Cox Cro Road, traffic remains heavy, especially where the two lanes of Route 9 merge into one just after the Route 571 intersection.

Alternate routes are suggested.

Route 37 eastbound, with commuters exiting the parkway north and south, remains heavy between Hospital Drive and Hooper Avenue. Lakehurst Road and the Highland Parkway remain relatively clear of traffic.

Traffic on Route 571 east and west bound approaching Route 9 is backing up at the major intersection, at 6:20 p.m.

The parkway north entrance from Route 37 West is backed up as parkway traffic remains snarled due to an accident response.
