Pedestrian OK After Being Struck Near Winding River Park

Apparent driver contacted police an hour later

A pedestrian was treated and released from Community Medical Center after being struck by a vehicle near the entrance to Winding River Park, police said.

Tracy Summey, 51, of Lakewood, was struck near the park entrance on Route 37 around 6:30 a.m. Monday, Chief Michael Mastronardy said.

Summery was walking on the shoulder when she was apparently struck, then thrown 40 feet after breaking the windshield, the chief said.

About an hour after the accident, a man who was driving a 2013 Hyundai identified as Arthur Berens, 67, of Toms River, contacted police headquarters to report something struck his windshield, and that he thought it was a deer, said Mastronardy.

Mastronardy said Berens spent the previous hour walking his dog in the park.

Traffic Safety Officer Mark Nater is investigating. No charges have been filed.
