Pedestrian Struck, Killed on Route 9 in Toms River

A 72-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed Sunday night on Route 9, police said.

The 9:27 p.m. accident occurred near the intersection of Route 9 and Clover Avenue, near the Walgreens store.

According to police spokesman Ralph Stocco, a Jeep was traveling southbound on Route 9 when it struck a male pedestrian who was in the roadway. The man, who was not identified since his family has not yet been notified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were still at the scene just prior to midnight and Stocco said that traffic would be detoured away from the crash site for several hours. During that time period, the road will be closed between Route 70 and North Maple Avenue.

Stocco said additional information on the accident is expected to be released sometime Monday morning.
