Police Arrest Bayville Man in Theft From Sears Store

Police: Bayville man stole coffee maker, knocked mall security guard to the ground with his car

Hours after posting his photo on social media sites and distributing it to the media, Toms River police arrested a Bayville man for stealing a coffee maker from the Ocean County Mall Sears store.

A tip led police to Puffin Glade in Bayville, where Berkeley Township patrol officers located a suspect vehicle and ultimately conducted an investigation that led to the arrest of Marcus F. Velazquez, 29, who lives on the street, police spokesman Ralph Stocco said.

Velazquez was charged by Toms River Police Detective Thomas Grosse with one count of robbery and is being held on $50,000 bail at the Ocean County Jail.

The Keurig, which retails for $189, had already been sold at a local business for $50 prior to Velazquez’s arrest, Stocco said.

The initial incident occurred at 11:34 am Thursday at Sears in the Ocean County Mall, when the suspect was seen on surveillance video concealing and removing a Keurig coffee maker from the store. Two loss prevention officers attempted to detain the suspect, however he fled the store and entered his car.

The suspect then put the car in reverse and struck one of the officers and knocked him to the ground as the suspect was fleeing the scene, Stocco said.
