Police: Cell Phone Glance Results in Crash

Man taken to the hospital with injuries

A township man was injured in a Thursday crash that he said was caused by glancing at his cell phone.

Sixto Colon III was operating a 2010 Hyundai at 11 p.m. when he struck a tree after turning from Maimone Street on to his driveway, said Chief of Police Michael Mastronardy.

"Mr. Colon reported to Officer Sean Smith that he glanced down to look at his cell phone and struck a tree on the north side of his driveway," the chief said.

Colon was transported to the Jersey Shore University Medical Center by the Toms River First Aid Squad with leg, back and head injuries, according to Mastronardy.

Only a "glance"? Really? Police should check his phone records. He was dialing, talking or texting, I'll bet.

I agree with you. The other morning on Hooper there was a young girl texting while driving and she wasn't at all paying attention to driving. She was going slow and drifting into the other lane and no one could get around her. No one enforces the law, so that is what you get.

We could pay our town's entire annual budget just with the fines for texting and calling, if the law was enforced. Do it, officer! (Oh, sorry to interrupt your personal call, sir.)

Great story! Glad to hear your on your way back. Also happy to see someone else noticing that inRead More some places it still looks like Sandy hit yesterday. Some mayors might consider that "complaining".
