Police in N.C. Shoot, Kill Toms River Man As He Was Stabbing His Wife

Police have not determined a motive in stabbing that occurred in parking lot

Police in Hope Mills, N.C. shot and killed a Toms River man on Thursday morning after he had stabbed his wife in a bank parking lot, local media reported.

According to WTVD-TV, the incident occurred at about 10 a.m. Thursday in a PNC Bank parking lot, as Darrell Haymon, 53, was stabbing his wife, Lorrie Haymon, 51, when two police officers arrived at the scene.

"When our officers got here, the assault was still in progress, with the male subject actively stabbing the female," Police Chief Joel Acciardo told WRAL-TV.

Acciardo told WTVD that when Darrell Haymon saw police officers arrive, he grabbed his wife by the throat and refused commands to let her go and drop the knife. Two of the six responding officers opened fire when they saw him getting ready to stab her again.

Officers Kristen Thompson and Brad Dean, the officers who shot Haymon, started life support immediately afterwards to no avail, the WTVD report said.

Lorrie Haymon survived the attack and was taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital for treatment, according to WNCN-TV. She was due to be released from the hospital on Friday.

Police have not yet ascertained a motive for the stabbing, according to the report.
