Police: Man Orders Pitbulls to Attack Utility Worker

Warrant issued for aggravated assault

A Toms River man with a stick and two pitbulls threatened a utility worker and remains a wanted man after an incident Tuesday afternoon.

Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said police responded to Whittier and Gladney Avenues for a possible assault at 2 p.m. Tuesday, where a man was confronted by a resident as he was working on utilities there.

"Investigation found that a 28 year old man was making utility mark outs at 29 Gladney Avenue when he was confronted by a resident," Mastronardy said in an email. The man was threatened and told to leave the property by the resident, he said.

The resident then approached the utility worker with a stick in his hand and his two pitbulls, Mastronardy said. The man commanded the dogs to attack the worker.

"He ordered the utility worker off his property then returned shortly with a stick and two pitbulls that he ordered to sick him and kill him," he said.

The victim then ran back to his truck and was safe when he then called police, Mastronardy said.

Officers Nicholas Franco and Bob Burczyk responded.

The man, believed to be Michael Crown, 32, of Gladney Avenue, was not able to be located by police, said Mastronardy. A warrant for his arrest was issued for charges of aggravated assault.

Hey boo boo or should I say jen he doesnt like you get over it he loves his dogs maube you should get off the computer and take care of the 90 cats running around the neighborhood because of you
Stan Buchwald August 29, 2012 at 09:54 PM
Hey junior, if you were there and witnessed what happened, why did he run??? If the utility worker over reacted than its no big deal. Right? Besides you said it was the homeowner that called the police. Again, why did he run? This guy has a long history with the law,I don't by the bad things happen to good people defense in this case. Something's not right here, and we are not getting the whole story. People bashing the pit bull side of this story seem to be overreacting. While it may be true these dogs in question are good with people, ask the neighborhood pet owners. They refuse to walk their dogs on that portion of Gladney Ave due to those dogs. Hope the Patch stays on this one, but I doubt it.

Boo boo, your right on the money. This guy is no good.
boo boo August 29, 2012 at 10:24 PM
First of all this isnt Jen. Second of all Junior, it all boils down to one thing WHY DID HE RUN FROM THE COPS WHEN THEY CAME?? Of course you dont want to answer that question. Maybe you should have stuck up for your buddy and straightened this out since you "witnessed" the whole thing. What a joke

ruff rida August 30, 2012 at 12:40 AM
Since my comments were deleted Im gonna clean them up a bit. Junior it makes no sense that the homeowner, Michael Crown aka Junior, was the one who called the cops and yet he is the one who took off when them cops came.
puss in boots August 30, 2012 at 12:57 AM
I think Junior is the homeowner defending himself

Guess you don't like Buster Brown or the Victrola dog. I liked Petey.
shoreff73 August 30, 2012 at 12:33 PM
Ok..jr.. why would a utility worker that has never met Michael nor ever been to that house. That was dispatched to his residence for a job, make up this story... Stop with your banter.. the TR police are not going to issue a agg assult warrant just because someone told them a "story".. they obviously have evidence and statements of witnesses that was enough to charge him..if not dont you think the news would say..wanted for questioning?!!
So Much to Say August 30, 2012 at 12:53 PM

Looks to me like Michael has narcotic and burglary charges. someone did say he was a good guy right? Narcotics is one thing, but burglaries dont usually happen by good guys.....

I understand that Utility Workers are allowed to mark the property when work is to be done, but twice we have come home to VERIZON FLAGS and orange spray on our lawn. We don't use Verizon nor did we ask for any work to be done. When I called VERIZON they said they had no record of any work ordered and could give us no answer as to why the flags and spray were used. I telephoned the police who told me "Utility Workers are allowed...." Yes, I understand but VERIZON? What kind of work are they being allowed to do??? And, I'm not supposed to be notified about anything even though the the markings and flags came right to the house?? My conversation with the policeman was polite but non-informative. I took down the flags and washed the paint away. None of my neighbors properties have been marked this way and my cable company, Comcast, says they don't know anything. I feel very uncomfortable for unknown people doing unknown work coming onto my property without notifying me as to what is being done. Am I wrong?
Jo August 31, 2012 at 08:48 PM
Melisa, What if the contractor is VERIZON who has NOT been asked by the homeowner to install their wires or whatever? Twice we pulled up Verizon flags and paint and called them, with no satisfaction, they always say they don't know why our property is being flagged! Can we do anything about this?
Jo August 31, 2012 at 09:11 PM
But who ordered the work? An unscrupulous fiber optics cable company who won't take "no, I don't want it because you'll dig up my lawn" as an answer??
Jo August 31, 2012 at 09:14 PM
Shouldn't the homeowner be notified beforehand as to what is being done and who ordered it?
Jo August 31, 2012 at 09:18 PM
The homeowner should be notified beforehand about what work is being done and WHAT CONTRACTOR ordered it. Otherwise, ANYONE can come on your property with a van and some flags and paint and check out your back door!
shoreff73 September 06, 2012 at 05:26 PM
just cause you have "verizon, or JCPL, Comcast, NJNG...ect" flags dosent mean they are doing work... those flags just help identify where that specific utility is located underground... any work that requires digging must be marked out by nj law. .....the town could of been replacing a sign post in your front yard and called for a markout. i dont understand why some people get upset that a markout was done on there lawn... why be nervous or angry about a utility worker, with an orange vest, equiptment in hand and truck(s) clearly labled (JCPL< COMCAST<VERIZON<NJNG...ect) parked infront of where they are working!??! do u have something to hide, are you on drugs, paranoid !? bottom line...they have a job to do, they are sent to a location to perform a job thats required by law, for not only the safety of the workers but also YOUR safety... STOP CRYING and B**ching about these men and women doing there jobs, and start paying attn to crazy people with bats and attack dogs!!!!!!!
Jo September 12, 2012 at 01:00 PM
To shoreff73: I have since found out that, despite my canceling Verizon FIOS, they failed to notify all parties. I have Comcast and did not want Verizon interfering with the service I already have and decided to keep. Mission Accomplished through numerous phone calls to find out which contractor/utility was called by Verizon. As an aside: pls note that It's not paranoia to take an interest in your property and what's being done in your community. If you believe there are "crazy people with bats and attack dogs" out there, you are not only paranoid but you should agree that a knock on your door by a utility worker to advise you would take away that worry. You have a lot of anger in you.
Jon L November 13, 2012 at 05:19 PM
I agree 100%. The real animals are the owners of the dogs who train them to be weapons. They're the ones who give the breed a bad rap. If the dogs attacked someone, they'd most likely be put down while the owner gets a slap on the wrist. It's just unfair.
Bowie Thelonius November 26, 2012 at 09:27 PM
From the article: "He ordered the utility worker off his property then returned shortly with a stick and two pitbulls that he ordered to sick him and kill him," he said. Not to nitpick (okay, I'm nitpicking), but the word is "sic", meaning to order an attack, not "sick".
