Crews working on the Route 35 reconstruction project reportedly struck a gas main at about 8:45 a.m. Thursday morning, leading to a closure of the roadway.
According to police spokesman Ralph Stocco, a contractor who was digging in the area accidentally broke the gas line causing a leak that is still active as of 9:30 a.m.
New Jersey Natural Gas Company is on its way to the location to seal off the leak which is at Route 35 north and Holiday Road. A several block area has been evacuated until the leak is repaired.
"We expect the leak to be closed within the next half hour but repairs could take all day," Stocco said.
Traffic detours are being set up and motorists are urged to avoid the area.
