Gas Main Break Closes Route 35 in Ortley Beach, Prompts Evacuations

Crews working on the Route 35 reconstruction project reportedly struck a gas main at about 8:45 a.m. Thursday morning, leading to a closure of the roadway.

According to police spokesman Ralph Stocco, a contractor who was digging in the area accidentally broke the gas line causing a leak that is still active as of 9:30 a.m.

New Jersey Natural Gas Company is on its way to the location to seal off the leak which is at Route 35 north and Holiday Road. A several block area has been evacuated until the leak is repaired.

"We expect the leak to be closed within the next half hour but repairs could take all day," Stocco said.

Traffic detours are being set up and motorists are urged to avoid the area.

No surprise here. Our entire house shook at least a dozen times from the pounding on Rt. 35 this morning, and then came the hiss from the gas. Too much rushing in order to get the Shore open for Memorial Day!

Love it....I'm sitting in my house 1/2 block from it and no one ever came to my door. I did see all the emergency vehicles and had no idea that was going on. Makes me feel really safe...jeez
