Resident Posed as Contractor, Dealt in Stolen Jewelry

Indictment handed up by Ocean County grand jury

A Toms River man authorities say was performing work as an illegal contractor has been indicted on charges of dealing in stolen property.

Michael L. Popovitz of Homestead Run development was indicted last week by an grand jury that upheld police charges that he dealt in jewelry stolen from two women. Popovitz allegedly trafficked jewelry worth more than $1,000 from two victims from December 2010 to the end of January 2011.

Grand jurors also indicted Popovitz on a charge of being an unregistered contractor for allegedly offering to make home improvements from Jan. 1 to April 9 without being registered with the state Division of Consumer Affairs.

Popovitz was initially held on $5,000 bail but posted Feb. 4.
