Residents Block In Pair Speeding Through Neighborhood

Police said two women were lost on Cedar Grove Road

Local residents concerned about two cars speeding down their road decided to block the vehicles in until police arrived, officials said.

Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said that around 4:30 p.m. Sunday police responded to a speeding complaint on Cedar Grove Road and Rue Lane. When they arrived, police found two vehicles blocked in the road, surrounded by 10 residents.

“Residents contacted police after two vehicles traveled down Cedar Grove road at a high rate of speed while children were playing nearby,” Mastronardy said in an email. Toms River residents Kandi McFarland, 31, and Stephanie Korsnes, 26, were driving their vehicles and following each other, said the police chief, and had apparently got lost and ended up in the culdesac.

At that side of Cedar Grove, a road that runs from Hooper Avenue to the Bay Avenue intersection, the road becomes a dead end after the light with Bay Avenue. The speed limit in the residential neighborhood is 25 miles per hour on Rue and 35 mph on Cedar Grove. The dead end features the start of a local walking trail and a resident’s basketball hoop for local children to use on the street.

Mastronardy said that the two cars encountered the dead end and slammed on the brakes.

“Both vehicles applied their brakes and came to a screeching halt at the dead end, and a resident blocked them in with their cars and contacted the police,” said the police chief.  “An investigation found that apparently the two women were coming from a bar and made a wrong turn.”

Officer Eugene Bachonski arrested both drivers on charges of driving while intoxicated.
